Rebekah Coulson Profile Rebekah Coulson answered Presuming you’re talking about the GAP store, then no, this is not true. Whilst GAP can mean the usual phrase, ‘gay and proud’, the store is not founded on this philosophy. The GAP store was originally known as ‘The Gap’, and was started back in 1969 by Donald Fisher and Doris Fisher. Urban legend has outlined that GAP actually means gay and proud, when in actual fact, it is a rebranding of the original ‘The Gap’ store. GAP is a clothing brand that takes its name from the original concept of the ‘generation gap’, which means that there are clothes available for both adults and children. This has nothing to do with homosexuality, and it is not in GAP’s interest to promote homosexual pride. The company has no official stance on this. The GAP came into existence back when Doris and Donald Fisher became incredibly annoyed by the lack of fashionable clothes and good customer services in stores, and so they took it upon themselves to come up with their very own brands of clothing. They came up with two mottos back in the early days, too, with ‘Levi’s for Guys and Gals’ and ‘fall into the Gap’. In 1982, the two decide to begin focusing on the private label clothing, and by the early 90s, the GAP stores stopped carrying Levi’s. GAP Inc. These days has over 150,000 employees in its stores, call centres and warehousing rooms, as well as over 3,000 stores that are spread across the world. The store is obviously still incredibly large in America, but is also popular in the United Kingdom. Whilst gay and proud is actually a saying, GAP does not use this as its core philosophy - nor is it named after the saying. Pamela Krueger Profile Pamela Krueger answered No this is NOT true; it is a false urban legend...check it out on www.snopes.com The family who created GAP used this name for "the generation gap" which which was a popular term used in the '60's describing intellectual, ethical, and the social gap between young people and their parent's generation. Taylor Richardson Profile Taylor Richardson answered I never thought of that before. At first, I just thought that it was a name like Adidas and Nike and Chico. I did hear some people say that Gap stands for gay and proud. So I guess it is. Anonymous Profile Anonymous answered I don't think thou,,,, as everybody would say it as a joke,,,just like 2 guys talking:The first one would say :: YOU KNOW WHAT FBI MEANS>>> the 2nd one would say: Federal Bureau of Investigation and then the 1st one laugh and say , no its: Female Body Inspector> or also they say : PEPSI MEANS: Pay Each Pany Saving Israel (which also I don't think so)anyway this is only an opinion,, Anonymous Profile Anonymous answered Yes, it is. But I am starting to think that it isn't because it sounds a little weird. Ill just go along with the crowd. Anonymous Profile Anonymous answered GAP originally known as 'The Gap' was started in 1969 by Donald Fisher and Doris Fisher. 'GAP' does not stand for gay and proud. It's only an urban legend that incorrectly states that it stands for gay and proud. GAP is a clothing brand that derives its name from the word 'generation gap' between adults and children Anonymous Profile Anonymous answered Well, I never really thought of it that way. But I don't think that it's true... Somebody probably just said it to be funny. Anonymous Profile Anonymous answered I've read a bunch of reports that there is no meaning behind GAP; however I love how comfortable their socks are. I buy a pair every time I go there. "Was started back in 1969" that would make this the perfect gay joke but I really only looked this up because there are a couple things from gap that I like that have the logo on them and I don't want to be known as "gay and proud".

Eight year old question, but a good example of what happens occasionally.

Apparently there is some evidence that the GAP was named with the generation gap in mind.

But it's common for various groups of people to come up with their own explanations for things for any number of good or bad reasons----some as put-downs, some for humor, etc.

I remember going into a store called the TAO. My association with the name comes from this: Tao or Dao; the sound Dào is a Chinese word signifying 'way', 'path', 'route', 'key' or sometimes more loosely 'doctrine' or 'principle'. Within the context of traditional Chinese philosophy and religion, the Tao is the intuitive knowing of "life" that cannot be grasped full-heartedly as just a concept but is known nonetheless through actual living experience of one's everyday being. The Tao differs from conventional (Western) ontology in that it is an active and holistic practice of the natural order of Nature and its universal awakening, rather than a static, atomistic one. (Wikipedia)

I was absolutely intrigued with the items in the store and I tried to understand their inventory in terms of "actual living experience of one's everyday being."

I subsequently found out that the store was named for the first letters in the phrase "Try Anything Once."

(KISS---Keep it simple, stupid.)

Samantha Profile Samantha answered I don't think that that is what it started out being, it was probably something else. A few people must have been joking around, and made that up, and it has been passed around. Anonymous Profile Anonymous answered Being 42 I do know what GAP stands for - generation gap, but if "gay and proud" suits you better - that's fine too. I have 2 kids in school and I truly believe that some young ladies probably need a job to pay for their cool clothing (plus, "expensive" often means "immature" and it is showing really bad) and bring their attitude closer to reality. I am too old for this brand, but I still buy some stuff there for my kids when the quality is good. By the way, there is BabyGap also, and you can not brainwash infants to buy certain brand, and, as we all know, there are no "biological" infants in gay couples. Anonymous Profile Anonymous answered My friend uses it to piss me off, but all in all it is just Gap. It's a company so I think they would tell you. I mean it sells kids clothes. Anonymous Profile Anonymous answered The family who created GAP used this name for "the generation gap" which which was a popular term used in the '60's describing intellectual, ethical, and the social gap between young people and their parent's generation.
