the development that Fou is Primate Murder still bothers me quite a bit. When I first learned that Fou was reality’s #1 best human killing machine, I was pretty cool with it actually and thought it was a neat twist, but getting to see the development of that in NA is actually rather underwhelming and kind of ass-pull-y imo. Mainly because when it is finally revealed, it is revealed only for the purpose of taking it away.
Fou only reveals he’s Primate Murder because he’s not going to be Primate Murder anymore. He gives up his “life” to restore Mashu’s, and the only way he can do this is because he says, “I am Primate Murder (btw), but I will cease being such in exchange for you to live, thereby removing my existence and reducing myself to that of an animal with no intellectual thought.”
Which, on another note, it still feels like Fou himself should have died in exchange for Mashu to live, because Fou’s body IS Primate Murder and is inexplicably linked to him. Fou himself says the only reason he appears so cute and cuddly is because Merlin basically sealed his time flow so he could not mature into his true unsightly self. But the way it’s written sort of treats the death of Primate Murder to be as though it was more so sealed into Fou’s body and Fou’s existence is different than Primate Murder’s.
It just really bothers me the way it was used in the story. Sure, we get hints here and there that Fou may be more than he seems but the fact that the reveal is only used to essentially be a throwaway fact makes the entire reveal feel underwhelming.
Hi. Sorry for chiming in. Primate Murder is just a name/title he has in Tsukihime, it’s not related to Fate where he’s Cath Palug, the potential Beast of Comparison/Conflict, one of Seven Humanity’s Evil-Self Destruct system, but Fou seems to have been able to escape his fate of being used like this yet.
Some bits of Merlin and Spoilers for part 2.
edit: I AM SORRY I HAD TO REMOVE THE READ MORE BECAUSE IT LEAD TO A DEAD LINK.
spoilers below. WARNING!
———————————–SPOILERS———————————-
Lore background on Merlin
Merlin kicked him out 1,500 years ago, but Fou didn’t go on lunching human conflict, so he didn’t manifest as Beast. And he found himself in Chaldea eventually, becoming attached to the place, starting with Mashu. Furthermore, the reason why Merlin and Fou look-alike is due to have a “similar origin” and Merlin himself is also a potential humanity evil as well (there are hints Merlin can get a less humanoid shape too).
Now spoilers for part 2 Cosmos in the Lostbelts.
Koyanskaya Tamamovitch/Daji/potential Beast too leads the invasion/infiltration to Chaldea and, among other things, kicks and hurts Fou when he tries to protect Ritsuka, mocking him for being just a normal, helpless animal. In LB3, we have confirmed by Sion that Fou feels like an AI whose program got to ‘restart’ recently. Fou is beginning to talk and to think like a clever person again, it’s very protective of Chaldea, and absolutely hates Tamamovitch who he wants to murder on sight (he attacks her). So in the future, there might be a Beast vs Beast battle with those two.
TL;DR: He’s a good kitty cat-squirrel which is fitting. He was accepted as a friend, team member, loved and cared for; that’s his defeat. He never attacks unprovoked. From the backstory manga:
