Importance Of Digging In Volleyball

In a volleyball game, players will seize opportunity to hit or smash the ball over their opponents. The opponents have to be on defense to take the ball before the team can be on offense (Clemens & McDowell, 2012). As such, I chose digging as the technique for area of improvement. Digging is a fundamental skill in volleyball and it is a common form of defense that can be set up a lot of the offense. When the attacker hits or spikes the ball over, diggers have to prevent the ball from landing the floor. Diggers must be able to anticipate the spike or attack and prepare to quickly move or dive in any direction. They should have strong footwork for the them to move laterally, forward and backward at a variety of movements. With good conditioning …show more content…
Players must be ready to move fast from their base to dig the ball. When practicing to dig the ball, there is a full range of motion pupils can apply to control the ball, like moving or sliding laterally, forward, and backward. As such, the digger’s base posture helps pupils to build physical and mental alertness in the play. A forearm dig should always be performed with both hands and able to absorb the balls’ impact. Teaching forearm dig challenges the pupils to keep the ball in control. It can be practiced individually or with a partners. As individual practice, the pupil can toss the ball in the air, lets it bounce and moves under the ball to dig to self and repeat the process. With pair practice, teacher can emphasize the contact point of ball in front of the body. The pupil A can feed the ball slightly in front of the pupil B who will move forward to dig the ball back to pupil A. As the pupils are encouraged to have good control of the ball and floor move.
