To my way of thinking, there is. If I placed a call to my husband and he didn't answer, that is a "recent call" that should go in the log, and would show as missed. Not so? The grey icon appears when the call is answered, yes, but what about when it is not answered?

There is no such thing as an "outgoing missed call". Since you initiated the call, you did not miss the call.

All outgoing calls have a small grey icon on the left of a handset with an arrow pointing out away from it.

It will be in the log as an outgoing call. It will not be in your call log as a "missed call" because you didn't miss the call. You placed the call. It will be in his call log as a missed call.
