If you have been inspired by the locations in the Channel 4 / PBS / Fox drama “Indian Summers” (from the co-producers of “Downtown Abbey”) you must visit Penang and try our “Indian Summers” Tour.

Whilst this drama is set between the foothills of the Himalayas and tea plantations of Northern India, and tells the story of the decline of the British Empire and the birth of modern India, after an extensive search for suitable locations, Penang was chosen for its beautifully preserved heritage sites and culture.

The main filming location in Penang is Crag Hotel and Woodside Bungalow in Penang Hill. Apart from that, other heritage buildings in and around George Town such as Armenian Street, Suffolk House, Town Hall, Botanical Gardens, and the Penang State Museum are also featured in the series.

Armenian Street – The Indian Quarter is where the Indian residents of Simla live. It is also where the Delal family set up home during the summer months while Aafrin works for the Civil Service.

Suffolk House – Home to Lord Willingdon, Viceroy of India, the Viceregal Lodge is an opulent building and a sign of British power in Simla.

Ivy Cottage – Home to Dougie and Sarah, with its white picket fence and a pretty English garden, is Sarah’s little piece of England in Simla.

Woodside Bungalow – Recently bought by Ralph, Chotipool is his and Alice’s childhood home.

Crag Hotel – The social hub for British society in Simla, the club is presided over by Cynthia Coffin (Julie Walters), with a sign on the door proclaiming ‘No Dogs, No Indians’, it’s where the British go to dance and to forget.
