Your Cartilage Piercing Questions Answered

Your Cartilage Piercing Questions Answered

Industrial piercings have gained immense popularity in the world of body modifications, offering a unique and edgy style statement. Also known as scaffold or construction piercings, industrials are an intricate and visually appealing form of body art. If you're considering getting an industrial piercing or simply curious about this fascinating trend, you've come to the right place.

What Is An Industrial Piercing?

An industrial piercing is located on the ear and rather than just one hole, it consists of two piercings through the cartilage of the ear, which are linked with a barbell. The barbell sits inside the ear across the width of the two holes.

While styles can vary, an “industrial piercing” usually refers to a scaffold piercing that joins the anti-helix and helix parts of the ear. Variations of the industrial may join other parts of the ear such as seen with a rook-daith, vertical double conch, daith-lower conch, or anti-helix rook.

It is also possible to double down with this type of piercing, having more than one in a single ear, and, provided the right jewelry, you could (potentially) run up to four differing piercings through a single barbell: daith – rook – antihelix – lower conch. That said, this type of setup would be unusual but necessarily unheard of.

The Procedure: What to Expect

During the industrial piercing procedure, an experienced piercer will cleanse the ear, mark the desired locations, and use a hollow needle to create the two separate holes. A sterilized barbell or a custom-made piece of jewelry is then inserted through both piercings, connecting them. The piercer will provide detailed instructions on aftercare to ensure proper healing.

Is an Industrial Piercing Painful?

Pain perception varies among individuals, but most people describe industrial piercings as moderately painful due to the thick cartilage being pierced. The initial needle insertion and the pressure felt during jewelry insertion might cause discomfort. However, the pain is typically brief and well-tolerated.

What Types of Jewelry Can I Wear With An Industrial Piercing?

When you’re choosing jewelry for your industrial piercing, the most important thing is to make sure that it is of high quality. Not sure what material is safe to use? Let the professionals at Pierced help you out.

Industrial piercings are really flexible and there are plenty of ways to customize them. If you’re looking for something a little more individual than a stainless steel or Titanium bar, you can find bars that have beads or designs built into them. You could also use two pieces of jewelry in place of a single bar, such as circular barbells, labret studs or captive rings, which can all look stunning.

How Long Does An Industrial Piercing Take To Heal?

Healing times for an industrial piercing can vary. Most industrial piercings take 2-3 months to fully heal. You may experience some swelling in the first few weeks but this should reduce after that.

It is important to note that scaffold piercings are generally more prone to keloiding. A keloid is simply a medical term for a raised type of scaring that occurs when the skin heals after an injury.

The risk of keloiding is especially high when the two holes are not properly aligned as this causes more pressure on the rim of the piercing hole, leading to scarring.

Because of this, it is important that you have an experienced piercer like those at Pierced perform your piercing.

How Should I Care For My Industrial Piercing?

If you want to keep your industrial piercing looking and feeling good, it is important that you look after it, especially when it is healing. Looking after your piercing is easy if you follow these simple steps:

  • Try not to touch or play with your new piercings too much, especially if you haven’t washed your hands thoroughly first
  • Use natural, skin sensitive products to gently clean your piercing, especially whilst is it healing. A lukewarm saline solution works just fine applied with a cotton ball or Q-tip.
  • When drying your piercing, use a clean paper towel
  • Leave your original jewelry in while your piercing is healing
  • Try to avoid sleeping on your piercing as much as possible as it can add pressure to the jewelry
