When I started shooting 'Anastasia' I met Yul Brynner on the set and realized at once that he was shorter. I suggested putting a little block under him. He turned round and said to me: 'You think I want to play it standing on a box. I will show the world what a big horse you are.' I know sub 5'9" leading men like Boyer and Bogart supposedly wore lifts, but they still could look inches taller than Bergman, and 5'8.5" is right between her 5'8" and 5'9" claims (gave her choice to round up or down).
