Is the Abaddon Hotel featured in found footage horror Hell House LLC real? Cannibal Holocaust from 1980 is considered the first found footage horror, with the results proving so convincing that director Ruggero Deodato was later taken to court to prove he hadn't actually murdered his cast. The popularity of the genre exploded with The Blair Witch Project, a microbudget horror movie where a trio of students gets lost in the woods investigating the title witch. The movie was a sensation when it was released and is considered one of the genre's best. Found footage is no longer a niche genre and some of the most effective examples of the format include REC and Cloverfield.

Another found footage movie with a similar concept is 2015's Hell House LLC. This takes place in the aftermath of a haunted house attraction going badly wrong, leaving over a dozen people dead and the police and press with a lot of questions. Years later the makers of a documentary about the tragedy meet with Sara, the only known survivor of the team behind Hell House, and she gives them never-before-seen footage detailing the build-up to that fateful night and what really happened. Hell House LLC does such an effective job of blurring the lines that some viewers have wondered if there is an Abaddon Hotel tragedy true story.

Hell House LLC Isn't A True Story

Hell House LLC 3 Lake Of Fire

While it does a great job seeding in the lore of the Abaddon Hotel tragedy, Hell House LLC is not based on a real story. The filmmakers shot the movie on location at the Waldorf Estate of Fear haunted house attraction in Lehighton, Pennsylvania. The Waldorf stands in for the Abaddon in the movie, with the movie's subsequent sequels The Abaddon Hotel and Lake Of Fire fleshing out the hotel's twisted backstory. The original Hell House LLC is considered a gem of the genre, and the trilogy attracted a cult following. While the Abaddon Hotel tragedy's true story may not be real, the popularity of the series has seen fans head to Waldorf Estate of Fear every Halloween.

Hell House LLC Origins Continues The Franchise

A skeleton and a woman in Hell House LLC

There were two sequels to Hell House LLC, adding to its lore, although neither of the follow-up movies matched the first in quality. The second movie focused on the investigation of the deaths that occurred in the first movie, as well as the crew members of Hell House who died. It is done a little differently with interviews interspersed with the found footage. The third movie added a lot more horror to the movie, with a claustrophobic filming style, even though it was very close in storyline to the first movie and offered little to the lore of the Hell House. However, Hell House LLC Origins promises to fix that.

Hell House LLC Origins began filming back in April 2023 and this time, the movie is a prequel. This should go a long way in answering many of the questions the first three movies left viewers with. This is also going to be the first of the Hell House LLC Origins movies. In this new movie, some cold case investigators stay in Carmichael Manor, where there were unsolved murders from the eighties. However, after four nights there, they were never heard from again. It will continue the found footage format and show what their tapes showed from their stay in the haunted mansion.
