So like i play alot of pvp minecraft and i was wondering is it possible to blow up obsidian on smp? like alot of bases are surrounded in obsidian. We also play with factions so i mostly use tnt cannons. Its honestly impossible otherwise. Any ideas? Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

You can blow up obsidian it takes what 285 blocks of TNT on the same spot to blow it up tho other wise use a pick fist takes a bit but works too :tongue.gif: Rollback Post to Revision RollBack That's a very nice everything you've got there, it would be a shame if something were to happen to it... well continue building and have fun! ^-^ ~TheFriendlyCreeper

Technically it IS possible, but the ammount of damage needed to blow it up is somewhere between 190-215 tnt blocks all going off at the same time in the same exact spot. I've blown up obsidian using the single player command "Explode" and set the value to 200 The same conditions cannot be achieved in vanilla minecraft Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

See thats the thing about factions. You can claim land like world guard. It conquers a chunk at a time and the base is floating over water so its impossible to use a pick on. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

...really? I remember reading on the wiki that it can only be broken with stone pick and up...I'll have to check again... And if you can blow it up with 285 blocks of TNT (which if it isn't 285, it's still possible) I can test this in creative quite easily, when I can that is. Nope. If one TNT isn't enough then no amount will work. Blast resistance resets between each calculation. From the wiki:
Note that the effect of multiple explosions, no matter how simultaneous, on one block is evaluated independently and serially per explosion, and blocks don't have "temporary health" and such properties across explosion history. That means explosions have no cumulative effect on blocks.

A diamond pickaxe is the fastest way to mine obsidian. You can do it by hand, but it will take a while, I'm not sure if other pickaxes are faster. Also, obsidian is pretty much blast proof. Last edited by Yogierin: Feb 15, 2012 Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

You can mine obsidian with anything, but it will take a long time. It is fastest with a diamond pick, and will only drop as an item with a diamond pick. But it's not possible to blow it up with vanilla explosions. Only diamond is tough enough. All other picks are same as hand (50 seconds, no drop.) You can mine it faster if you have an Efficiency enchant (max level is 5, not sure what the difference is between levels as the wiki just states +10% speed without mentioning levels.) Obsidian is TNT proof. However, a diamond pick, and only a diamond pick, can break it. And it takes 15 seconds. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack CreeperLord14: Redefining the horror of creepers everywhere. The ultimate Minecrafter

That was the old time. It's down to like 10 seconds now. Efficiency can reduce the time but I'm not sure if it brings it down to 9 seconds (regardless of level,) 5 seconds at level 5 (if the percents are additive per level,) or 10×0.9^5 ≈ 5.9 seconds at level 5 (if the percents are multiplicative per level.) Oh, Minecraft forums, where tons of people will answer the same exact question in just about the same exact way. There seems to be a tiny misconception about obsidian's blast resistance going on, though. You can't simply place 285 blocks of TNT and expect the explosion to be "strong" enough to destroy the TNT. What the original poster of this "285" thing meant is that the TNT has to be compressed so that the power of 285 TNT blocks is inside one actual TNT block. Without mods, this is impossible. I'll try to help you as much as I can, OP, by saying that if you can't build under their base, and if it's a floating one made out of obsidian, there's no real way to destroy it unless some rules are changed around. The only way of removing obsidian without mods is the manual one. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack Ceci n'est pas une Signature.

Looks fake. There's something fishy about the shape of the crater. Try to detonate a ball of TNT yourself and see what kind of crater you get. It's not going to be sphere shaped. Of that I'm certian. Last edited by Sheltered: Feb 15, 2012 Rollback Post to Revision RollBack
