Is It Too Late to Kill Lawn Weeds? October 17, 2012Here’s the skinny for all you spouses who want your better half to wipe out lawn weeds this fall. (If you are one of those spouses on the receiving end of this order and have already claimed “we will need to wait till spring to kill those lawn weeds”, you might want to hide this blog posting.)
As long as your daily temps are reaching a high of 45 degrees or more the day you spray, you can kill pesky perennial weeds like Dandelion, Clover and Ground Ivy (Creeping Charlie), as well as annual weeds like Chickweed and Henbit. Kill them this fall and they will not be in your lawn next spring.

Fall is a great time to kill Ground Ivy, also known as Creeping Charlie
There are various Ortho Weed-B-Gon products depending on where you live. Click here to see your options.
Note: If you planted grass seed this fall, it is best to wait until the new seedlings have been mowed 4 times before you apply weed killers.

Thank you this was very helpful , however how can you control weeds th at are coming from a neighbo rs grass if the yards are almosr running together? When i weed my grass in my yards the grass is so green and pretty once the weeds are gone so beautiful but on one side of my neighbors grass is over crowded with weeds and the just keep fertilizing the grass they dont water afterwords the jusst spray and go its just so over grown with weeds my husband just says leave that side of the yard alone but I dont want to do that. Is therea solution.?

Hi True The best defense for keeping weeds from spreading to your lawn from your neighbors is to make your grass thicker with fewer thin areas where the weed seeds can germinate. You do this by feeding your lawn 4 times or so per year and mowing at one of the taller settings on your mower. This helps to keep new weeds from taking hold in your lawn. Another suggestion is to make sure your first feeding of the year contains a crabgrass preventer so you set up a barrier in your lawn that will discourage annual weeds from germinating in late spring/summer.

Hi Barry You can use Scotts Bonus S Weed & Feed. Water after application. Most folks think of this as an early spring product, however it can be used now.

I live in California and i have just re-seeded a quarter of my lawn that was just dead when we bought this house. I took out all the dead grass and added new soil before re-seeding. Now grass is growing but it is full of clovers that have taken over the new re-seeded area. Should i spray it with weed-be-gone or it is going to kill my new seed.

Hi Hugo You can not spray your weeds until your new grass has been mowed 4 times.

Hi Nancy It is best to apply our Plus 2 weed & feeds to moist foliage with no rain or irrigation for 24 hours. Our Bonus S weed & feed should be watered after application.

How do I kill “Virginia Button Weed” in my st Augustine/centipide lawn?

Hi Jerry Griep I have never had this weed problem. According to Walter Reeves (The Georgia Gardener), Virginia Button Weed is one of the tough ones to control. Here is a link to what he wrote in his blog: http://www.walterreeves.com/lawn-care/virginia-buttonweed-overwhelming-our-centipede-lawn/ Roundup For Lawns (the southern grass formula) lists Virginia Buttonweed on the label. This is the Roundup you can use on your lawn without killing your good grass (do not confuse with regular Roundup that kills all vegetation). Here is a link to product info: https://www.roundup.com/en-us/products/lawn-weeds-bugs/roundup-lawns4-ready-use?rhmiss=151939760556600004691 I would spray a small area first to make sure you are not causing harm to your grass since it is going into the slow growth winter period soon. You will likely need to do repeat applications during the growing season. Hope this helps.
