The actual instructions attached to the throw say to wash in warm water, not cold. I'm pretty sure cold would be OK if you lok at the fabric content, however. And surprisingly, on required label, there is no mention of NOT adding fabric softener in the wash or dryer sheets in the dryer. Yet it is well assumed that softeners make microfibers such as this throw is made of, no good at all, causing bunching and a nasty feel to the throws. I used an innocuous detergent ON WARM and in a delicate cycle. I added no softener at all and this throw is AWESOME! I would suggest WASHING it before use as the throw had a very mild chemical smell. It doesn't get that cold here in southeast Texas, although I've used it quite a bit. But I wouldn't hesitate to wash it. I'd wash it on cold, gentle cycle, with a low heat/delicate dry setting.
