Facts about fruit juice concentrate

With an increase in overall health consciousness, people are trying out new and healthier diets every single day to lead a better life. Gone are the days when one would simply eat a meal without worrying about gaining weight or losing muscle. Nowadays, people think twice before consuming anything because of the variety of available options. The so called ‘health revolution’ has given rise to a popular fad, namely fruit juice concentrate. Let us take a look at what it is and how good it is for our body.

​What's a fruit juice concentrate

Fruit juice concentrate is the residue after the water has been taken out of the fruit using machines for extraction, resulting in the accumulation or ‘concentration’ of pulp from the fruit. It has been adopted as a healthy alternative because of the assumption that all the nutrition lies in the pulp, and that the water in the fruit has no value. But how far is this assumption true?

How good it is

Well, here’s the problem. Although it is true that the pulp contains a majority of the nutrients, processing the fruit to make the juice concentrate reduces the nutritional value, making it devoid of important vitamins. The concentrate goes through the process of heating, which evaporates all the water, but in the process destroys heat sensitive vitamins like vitamin B and vitamin C.

​The calorie measure

When it comes to calorie content, juice concentrates contain significantly higher calories as compared to the whole fruit, but more or less the same content as compared to regular fruit juice. For example, orange juice and orange juice concentrate both contain 112 calories and 21 grams of sugar per glass, while a whole orange contains just 45 calories and 9 grams of sugar. What makes the concentrate more unfit for healthy consumption is the addition of sugars and other high calorie additives.

​Should you have juice concentrates

So are there any benefits of consuming juice concentrates? Yes, there are a few benefits.

- By a process known as fortification, nutrients that are not present in certain fruits, such as calcium or magnesium are added to the concentrate to make them healthier.

- If sold without adulterants like artificial colours and sweeteners, juice concentrates can be consumed as a natural health supplement.

- Juice concentrates are a more convenient, cheaper and equally healthy source of antioxidants.

- Healthy juice concentrates can aid weight loss by making the consumer feel satiated, therefore curbing the desire to eat.

- Juice concentrates are more affordable than regular fruit juice.

- They have a significantly longer shelf life than fruit juice or whole fruits.

​What's the flip side

Now let’s come to the drawbacks of juice concentrates. A lot has been touched upon regarding the drawbacks of fruit juice concentrates, but just to sum up:

- Important vitamins are not present.

- Juice concentrates contain a higher amount of calories.

- Most juice concentrates are sold with added colours, flavours, and sugars, making them an unhealthy drink overall.

- They do not provide complete nutrition like the whole food, as they lack other essential bodily requirements like fiber.

- Added sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup are detrimental to our health and have been associated with problems like disrupted metabolism and arthritis in young adults.

- In most cases, the source of fruit is not known, and it might be sprayed with pesticides and fertilizers.

​Which is better

People have different preferences. Someone might consider a longer shelf life, and will go for fruit juice concentrate. Someone else might prefer taste, and would go for fruit juice. But since this is a health-centric article, we will favour the consideration of a health conscious individual. So the verdict is, for a holistic healthy choice, the best option is to consume a whole fruit rather than juice or juice concentrate, as it contains all essential vitamins and minerals. Moreover, fruits like apple and guava that can be eaten with the peel contain an added amount of fiber which is essential for the body. Whole fruits are also more wholesome, and they contain no adulterants.
