I'm not 100% sure what it is from because it isn't all of the time that she pees this color. I thought it might be from the carrots that she was eating, so I stopped feeding her those to see if it would go away. I feed her a spring mix with red and green lettuce and spinach; I'm thinking it might be from the red lettuce, but I don't want to make assumptions. I've also read that sometimes you can tell if the guinea pig is dehydrated if there poops are teardrop shaped and their urine is red. I have a couple of pictures that show just her urine and then the urine with her poop. Some look like they might be tear dropped, but she is my first guinea pig so I'm not 100% sure what is normal and what isn't. Like I said, she's had this orange/reddish urine before but it's not every single time and it's only occasional. The poops I never knew about that so this is the first time I'm noticing it. Other than that she seems like a perfectly healthy guinea pig. She eats and drinks water and runs around and plays. She seems genuinely happy. She's about one year old so she's still fairly young, I think. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I don't want to keep running to the vet and spending a lot of money for something that isn't a concern. Thank you! [GuineaPigCages.com] Is my guinea pig's urine normal? Are you actually seeing your girl urinate a reddish color? Or are you seeing it after the fact? Be aware that urine oxidizes as it dries and becomes sort of an orange color. Put a white towel in the cage for a few hours and check it often to monitor her urine. If she urinates during lap time, then put a white towel under her at that time. I've never seen any food turn urine red in a cavy......unless you are feeding her beets! Fresh beets or rhubarb will turn human urine (and possibly feces) a reddish color. I remember my former husband going to the ER because he had "blood" in his urine and stool. This was the next day after visiting his parents and having fresh beets for dinner the evening prior. If she truly has blood in her urine, then that calls for a prompt vet visit. Click to expand...
I haven't actually seen her in mid pee, so I'm not sure if it is dry pee or not. Is that still a normal color though for dried pee? If I do see her pee and it hits the towel red, then is that an indication of something more serious? Or do I have to see it actually come out of her? Thanks for your response so quickly! I had a problem where I saw something red in the cage (when I first got Mocha and gave her pellets with colored bits and some of the bits were red) so I thought it was that. I had a white washcloth where she usually peed and the pee was normal color. Hope everything is ok! rebrandynora

If it dries a brown color, that could be blood. But orange is just fine. If they have a uti, they will squeak when they try to pee, and you can hold them on a white towel for awhile and see if they pee and if they squeak when they do. Basically there's a chemical in their pee that oxidizes with an orange color. Party Guineas

Orange dried urine is fine. It's best to see what colour the urine is when it is fresh. If it's just a wet spot (no real colour) or a bit yellow, then it's fine. If you witness her weeing, it could be yellow and slightly cloudy, this is also fine. When there is blood in the urine, it's not always red. It can be urine that has a slight pink or pinkish orange tinge when fresh. This can be a sign of a UTI, crystals irritating the bladder, or stones. One of my girls had crystals and started off with a light pink tinge to her urine. She also had pinkish orange fresh urine, which tested positive for blood. If you do find that her fresh urine has a pinkish colour, it's helpful to bring a fresh sample to the vet - just catch some of her urine as she's weeing in a little clean jar a couple hours before you go (vets can also give you a tube for this - mine did for free). I usually just do this during lap time until the urge comes! Hope all's well with her! Ashaaleigh912
