I used to encounter one about every 10th session, now I find one in every other session. Normally the first thing I do when I load in is to go to the Diamond Casino, and on the way there I stand a good chance of being griefed by someone and more often than not it's a modder.

If I can, I record them and upload it to YouTube then send it to Rockstar via the social club report a player feature, but sometimes I can't do this as they spam my screen with invite messages etc, or disconnect me from the session or crash my game.

It seems very easy to mod in GTA:Online and I know the game doesn't exactly feature the nicest of people out there, to be honest it's really grim. But is Rockstar actively doing anything to stop people modding?

It gets to a stage where I can only feel bad for modders in GTA:Online. I mean, if you're modding in this game, you must be one Hell of a loser in life.

Not really. GTA Online is peer-to-peer so there aren't a lot of ways to detect cheaters. One way would be to put pseudo clients into sessions that monitor what other clients send that they are doing, and flag actions that are obvious cheating. But Rockstar isn't doing that. Their main anti-cheat is people reporting cheaters. Not through the in-game report feature because cheat programs circumvent that, but players sending in videos that clearly demonstrate cheating.

But this could be irrelevant sadly. People using mods are able to spoof their profile, statistics and monetary related values so much, that their profile could look like a carbon copy of someone else's, and in reporting that person you could - theoretically - be chancing the original, legitimate player getting banned, as an example if you were reporting these and actions were being taken as a result.

Changing name is the obvious one, but it's also possible to "spoof" your Rockstar ID so you "appear as someone else" even to Rockstar - at least from a video recording point of view.

I agree there should be more of an effort... hell... an actual f*cking anti cheat as I've been really turned off with the PC version. Even San Andreas Multiplayer has vastly better anti cheat, and that's a third party app to enable multiplayer and is free.

Maybe we can cross our fingers, toes, balls (fellas) and eyes and hope Rockstar and Take 2 will take more of an initiative when it comes to this issue specifically, with the re-release of the game, come the Expanded & Enhanced version. I won't hold my breath though, and considering my relatively high-end system can't play this game at 1080p with maxed out graphics without dropping to less than 60fps in some areas, whilst other games like Forza Horizon 4 give me a minimum of 110 fps at the same resolution with higher graphical settings (like MSAA being on 8x and not 4x)... if nothing is done I'll probably jump ship to the PlayStation 5.

I'll also be withdrawing any interest in purchasing future Rockstar titles on PC in that case. Ability to mod the game and "hurr durr PC master race" is only relevant for so long.  Hell - I played the Xbox 360 version of GTA Online until about April 2015 and I never ran into a 'modder' once - the only thing I ever experienced where people messing with DNS codes or tunables or whatever back in 2013 / early 2014.

I think they can't do anything and that's why they don't even try anymore. For me, it's not a problem anyway, I never play on public sessions with other players, only with friends on empty public sessions.

Rockstar won't do jack about it, unless they can admit Peer-to-Peer is insecure and has to go, and they start running public lobbies on dedicated servers with anticheat. Until then, Invite-Only all the way.

The Cayo Perico heist has just reduced GTA Online to a single player game. You can now grind Cayo Perico and VIP work all day without ever setting foot in a public session. Sad state this game is in.

As much as I love Cayo Perico heist, I'm kinda sad about it.

PC may have a lot to offer over modern consoles, but being safe in an R* online game ain't one of them that's for sure.

Play on console. There are plenty of reasons to play games on a nice PC but GTAO is not one of them.

Modders on PC aren't going anywhere any time soon and their numbers are only growing. One of the newest menus has already sold nearly 50k copies. At 27 bucks per key it's simple to see why people make them.

One slight positive is that many people buying them now are doing so for the protections the menus offer and I've been in lots of sessions where one person is actively booting any trouble makers that show up while players grind away. Plus the asshole users are too busy trying to kick other menu users just so they can brag that their menu choice is superior. This game has a very strange player base.

you would think rockstar should be able to track players with monster bank accounts who have played nowhere near enough hours to accumulate it

they too busy counting billions to even bother investing money in servers to end the trash p2p networking that enables and make easy modding the game.

Now I'm legit considering getting a paid menu just to get an online character without the creator bullsh*t restrictions. If anyone can confirm if those changes stick then I'm on. The rest I don't care about

Their anti-cheat isn't really made to prevent cheats in real time, it's more to detect them and ban them later on. It tends to be a few hours late on that process too. So, you can say Rockstar does something about it, but it's just not good enough to be considered a success and kinda a deadlock situation.

[This post has been flagged and will be monitored] will do nothing. They got their money. They allowed the cheat program full admin rights, so if you try to report them, it hand delivers the report to the cheater themselves. Some will auto-boot you for that. Or worse, stalk you for the day or more.

Basically you have to rewrite part of the game to stop it, and they will not do that.

Meanwhile, this is why I don't grief or kill people in freemode:

Apparently, modders can still get you banned. And no appeals.

Of course they can get a player banned. R* can detect money drops easily and the player in that link was one that was caught and dealt with.

One can also get in trouble for hopping in a users god mode vehicle and the user can put you in semi GM without you even knowing it.

People are banned every day. Mod sites have threads for that. New mods are getting detected all the time.

Mostly any mod people use will be detected sooner or later. Usually more the mod is popular, the sooner. Once it happens, starting the game with mod active is enough to ban you. Usually you get week ban first, month ban second, permaban third.

Lately I've also seen people with short bans, but account wipe. Level, money, possessions, everything. I guess it might be better for RS as such person will not get new account, and thus will be easier to track in the future.

That said, there seems to be lot of mods which are not detected. Especially new ones, or obscure ones. Even so people can get ban based on personal report, and time to time there are even reports of mysterious RS employees raiding the sessions with ban hammer.

Also with every new version of the game, often old mods stop working. It's not like they are detected, but they have to be updated, and lots of them are dead projects, so they never will.

TLDR version: RS is doing something, just not hardly enough.

yep, I have received reports before in freemode for "modding".

I have had this happen when I join my friend who players in controller lobbies.

I've had "sniper wars" with controller users where they obviously don't stand a chance with a mouse user.

mouse vs controller with sniper; who wins?

well, instead of assuming I am using a mouse or trying to tell them I am using a mouse, I get called out for having an aimbot...

1 month of headaches while playing vanilla GTAO and RDRO in PC and i will never come back to the base game in PC because of it ...

R* official multiplayer anti-hacking measures in PC and a old broken in a half door are essentially the same.

Damn .... it is more than 12 years of p-2-p use in their multiplayer games, a common facilitator to hackers around.

A anti-cheat which first detects and ban later and of course thanks to its flaws it have workarounds aka mod menus.

Cherry of the Cake ... GTA also have in general their really bad apples on the already bad PC community known as A**hats aka Modders which punish and ban innocent people just for fun. (I can log in a session right now just to see a hacker for the lulz).

Vanilla GTA Online in 2021 ... by now resume as uncommon God Mode fellas, Off-Radar fellas or both in FR sessions in consoles thanks to A**hats/Tryhards and the infamous Hackers in PC.

This recent update gave us a more broken experience than the Casino Heist or the Small summer update, even with a very profitable, solo and faster heist.

The situation with both RDRO and GTAO concerning hackers is pathetic, it gets more attention of GTAO players because of the higher playerbase, but still.

And it made my fears of a Enhanced version with a integrated Crossplay feature with PC players real.

On counterpart but related ...

Still pathetic how older GTA's have proper modified client/servers made by fans which also runs better anti-hacking measures, plus general coding and features.

GTA SA had in a recent time more than 1M users active on both MTA and SAMP and nowadays ... 350k~700k monthly.

The older than half of the GTA V playerbase aka ... 17-years MTA and the 15-years SAMP clients runs modded and proper dedicated servers, c'mon since early III/VC/SA multiplayer era; The community/fans works on dedicated servers and clients for games which wasn't even focused on multiplayer features, R* didn't learned nothing about that.

GTA V on PC is only alive and still a success because fellas put a hell of effort on mods, scripts, restored features and also modded servers powered by a client like Five-M and their vast general FR servers or gamemode-themed servers or like Multi Co-Op client focused on RP servers.

And guess what ...

The Five-M or Multi Co-OP clients and all server fellas ...  those guys are doing a hell of a flawless job to keep the GTA V/PC aka the steam boat of the active multiplayer games alive in a way R* will never make.

Feels way better and safer to play on a unofficial modded server than in a official server.
