Always kind of liked it and was wondering if it was short for something and is it too old or plain to still use today?

Traditionally for Sarah, but it's got a long history of use as a stand-alone name.
I think it's sweet and refreshing for today.

I have a cousin Sara who uses Sally as a nickname. She has said MANY times that she's relieved her parents decided on Sara with Sally as a nickname rather than just Sally (which her mom was pushing for), because it is nice to have options and nice to have a more professional name for resumes.

My grandmother's name was Salvatoria nn Sally.
