The home of ‘hygge’ also houses one of the world’s coolest cities - Copenhagen, as well as a history that involves fairy tales, war stories and Scandinavian royalty.
Iconic in every right, the Little Mermaid statue sitting by Copenhagen’s waters attracts many tourist every year. But is the Little Mermaid Statute worth a visit? Is The Little Mermaid Statue overrated? We investigate.

The Little Mermaid, Copenhagen
Brief History of the Little Mermaid Statue
The Little Mermaid statue is one of those ubiquitous world attractions that immediately draws an image as soon as you mention its name to someone. Unveiled in 1913, this Bronze statue, was, of course, based on the very famous children’s fairy tale, The Little Mermaid by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen.

Weighing 175kg and only standing at 1.25m tall, the statue was created by Danish sculptor Edvard Eriksen. Since its creation, this poor little mermaid has been through a lot. The statue has been vandalized, damaged, defaced and tampered with countless of times, but has managed to have been restored each time.

Today the statue continues to shine as a symbol of Copenhagen city and Denmark itself.
Is The Little Mermaid statue really worth a visit?
It really depends what reason you would want to visit the statue for. Are you a major fan of The Little Mermaid? Have you read the fairy tale time and time again, or are you a big fan of the Disney movie by the same name? Are you interested in the history of the statue? Do you need to get it ticked off your bucket list?
Is The Little Mermaid statue worth a visit?
If your answer is no to any of the above, well then our answer is, no. The Little Mermaid statue isn’t really worth a visit. And if you are visiting, we wouldn’t spend any longer than about 10 minutes there. While The Little Mermaid definitely is an interesting slice of history that you can add to your Copenhagen trip, if you’re going out of your way to visit, we don’t really think it would be worth it.
The Little Mermaid statue size comparison
Simply lacking a ‘wow factor’ or any particularly aesthetic element to it, the statue is rather small and could pass off as any other statue if you didn’t know any better. In this picture you can see how small the statue is in comparison to myself. The surrounding area is nice, and is probably worth a stroll if you’re already in the area, but – again, if you’re going out of your way to see the statue, you might be underwhelmed.
Why you might want to visit The Little Mermaid
I would like to caveat this opinion by saying that on the other hand, if you are a big fan of the fairytale, and have a specific reason to go – by all means – you should definitely go. The Little Mermaid statue is undoubtedly an icon in every right, and if you want to get it ticked off your bucket list, you should do so.
The Little Mermaid statue’s surrounding area
We definitely don’t regret visiting but we wouldn’t be rushing back anytime soon (there are so many other cool things to do in Copenhagen city, trust us).
