It is much harder on your car to do a WOT from a standstill than it is when already going say 50mph. Of course, the amount of torque the engine has is also a factor. With our cars, I doubt much damage can be done to the drivetrain with WOT, unless you have a stick and you dump the clutch from a standstill.

Wide open throttle (WOT) refers to an internal combustion engine's maximum intake of air and fuel that occurs when the throttle plates inside the carburetor or throttle body are "wide open", providing the least resistance to the incoming air. In the case of an automobile, WOT is when the accelerator is depressed fully, sometimes referred to as "flooring it". At WOT, manifold vacuum decreases. Ideally, to preserve driveability and fuel economy, manifold vacuum should not fall any lower than 1" (mercury). E

Of course larger engines need beefier drivetrains, due to more torque, but it's all relative. The amount of stress, and where, depends on many things. WOT at low rpms is initially bad for the engine, not the rest of the drivetrain. Once rpm are up, it's equally hard for all the drivetrain, but nothing above what it was supposedly designed for. Dumping the clutch is bad for the clutch/tranny/diff, not the engine. The million dollar question is how many of those episodes is 'normal', without adding excessive wear to the drivetrain. The first to go if abused would be the clutch on a manual car, then the synchros if a shift is botched. And if not lugged, and with good oil, the engine should take quite a bit of punishment IMO. For the occasional WOT romp, I wouldn't even worry about it. As it was said, it keeps the motor 'healthy', and supposedly revs a bit easier than when never wrung out. Later. JC

I do it on the open highway at about 70-80mph. I don't think it hurts the car as long as you're not doing it every time you take off from a stand still... 1 - 8 of 8 Posts Insert Quotes Post Reply
