Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Issac
Issac is a variant spelling of Isaac. Isaac comes from the Bible as the son of Abraham; the son who was nearly sacrificed by his father as a burnt offering at God’s command (Genesis 22:1-13). At the last minute, an angel descended and yelled for Abraham to stop. Apparently, God was sufficiently satisfied that Abraham would have killed his son, his only son, for Him. Isaac lived on to father Esau and Jacob, and the story goes on from there. The origin of the name Isaac is not exactly certain. It is thought to come from the Hebrew word “Yizhaq” which means ‘to laugh.’ This definition would be apropos since Sarah (Isaac’s mother) laughed when the Lord said she would bear Abraham a son (Sarah was well past childbearing age). At Isaac’s birth, Sarah said: “God has made laughter for me.” (Genesis 21:6). The name has been used by both Jews and Christians since medieval times. In fact, the name dates back to the late 8th century – that’s a long time ago! Puritans also adopted the name in the 16th century which probably influenced its use in America. Issac with two “S”s instead of two “A”s is a more modern English variant to this ancient Biblical name. All About the Baby Name – Issac
Personality
OF THE BOY NAME ISSAC
Romance is the hallmark of the Six personality. They exude nurturing, loving, and caring energy. Sixes are in love with the idea of love in its idealized form - and with their magnetic personalities, they easily draw people toward them. Like the number Two personality, they seek balance and harmony in their life and the world at large. They are conscientious and service-oriented, and a champion for the underdog. These personalities naturally attract money and are usually surrounded by lovely material objects - but their human relationships are always primary. They thrive in giving back to others rather than being motivated by their own desires. This is when they achieve great things. Sixes are natural teachers, ministers and counselors.
Popularity
OF THE BOY NAME ISSAC
In the United States, Issac is a far less popular variant than the traditional spelling of Isaac. In fact, Isaac is a Top 50 male name in America today, but Issac is barely bestowed upon 600 baby boys per year. Issac with two “S”s has been around longer than we would have guessed. The name dates back to the late 19th century on the male naming charts – albeit at low levels of popularity. In fact, Issac is experiencing his peak usage right now as we’ve entered the threshold of the 21st century. This is no doubt influenced by the popularity of Isaac. It appears that some parents can’t get past the awkwardness of the double-a represented by the traditional spelling. So Issac is a name for non-traditional parents who like the sound of this name but prefer the double-s. In which case, your son will likely go through life having to confirm and reconfirm the spelling of his name. “That’s Issac with a double-s instead of a double-a.” Just to put it into perspective, about 95% of the Isaacs out there have the conventional spelling. How different do you want your son to be? That’s your call. Either way, the name’s etymology (i.e., ‘laughter') is quite charming no matter how it’s spelled.Quick Facts
