MACON, Ga. --- Whenever law enforcement needs help finding a suspect in a crime or a criminal, they issue a BOLO.

BOLO stands for Be On Look Out.

What happens after a BOLO is issued? That all relies on the efforts of the public.

That is also where the Macon Regional Crimestoppers come in. The Crimestoppers are the glue that holds together the eight counties surrounding and including Bibb County.

All in all, that includes Bibb, Baldwin, Monroe, Jones, Twiggs, Peach, Crawford, and Houston County.

BOLOs are issued by the sheriff's office for each county and the local police department in nearby cities. Crimestoppers acts as the tip line for anyone with information on any wanted persons.

"That's the benefit of the Crimestoppers program, it's anonymous. We don't have caller ID. We don't ask qualifying questions as to the caller's identity," said Corporal Greg Thomas.

Cpl. Thomas is the Executive Director for the Macon Regional Crimestoppers.

Crimestoppers releases a Top 15 Most Wanted List every quarter of every year.

So how successful are these BOLOs and do they actually help find the wanted persons?

In 2019, 60 names were released. That is 15 a quarter and four quarters in total. By the end of the year, 56 of those names were arrested. The success of the BOLOs for the Most Wanted was 93% in 2019.

This year, two lists have been released. That is a total of 30 names so far.

15 of them have been arrested. The success rate is 50% so far.

The success rate is dependent on the public and whether they give a tip or not.

"That's the power of the public. That is the power of teamwork. That is people working together hand in hand to keep all communities safe," added Cpl. Thomas.
