Kelly Perry ArticlesIt’s time to plant tulips, and in this article you’ll see some stunning tulip varieties to add to your garden plans.
I recently found a Christmas letter my mom wrote 17 years ago where she says, "I'm looking forward to spring already as we reworked my flowerbeds and I planted close to 100 bulbs. Hopefully the squirrels will not have a big feast over winter." I smiled fondly as I read it. These tulips were one of my favorite things about growing up. When I see hot, bright colors—reds and yellows—I think of my mom. Those are the ones she planted most, and boy were they big!
I remember clipping them for birthday tea parties I would throw for my friends and family in the yard or the patio. One of my fondest memories of my Grandpa was at one of these tulip-filled teas. He had an April birthday, and like my mom, he loved flowers. We all had that in common.
Below is a scene from Keukenhof in Holland. I traveled there with Florabundance and recommend hopping on the bus and traveling with them! We had a lot of fun, and I met some great friends. When I visited this vibrant display, it felt a lot like like going home even though I was thousands of miles from home.
I love that flowers can do that.
My friend Susan from Shady Grove Gardens shared some of her tulips with me one spring. She is a flower grower in Boone, North Carolina, and supplied me with treats like this throughout the season. I've asked her to share the varieties should you fall in love with one of them and like to add it to your garden plans.

Before planting your tulip bulbs, be sure to check your growing zone to ensure you have the proper amount of required cooling time. Also, as a fun tip, many bulbs will often be half price around Thanksgiving—so be on the lookout!
