Introduction

Ja Rule is an American professional rapper, songwriter, record producer, record executive, and actor with an estimated net worth of $4 Million.

Music Career

Before Ja Rule became as big as Gucci Mane, he started as a member of the hip-hop group Cash Money Click in 1994. The group worked with DJ Irv to create numerous songs, including the group’s debut single, “Get Tha Fortune.”

Sooner after, Cash Money Click was signed to TVT Records, but plans for their debut album were halted when Chris Black was sentenced to five years in prison. Chris Black’s arrest also led to TVT Records dropping the group, which caused Ja Rule to start his solo career.

Becoming A Solo Artist

Although Cash Money Click had been dropped, Ja Rule kept a close relationship with DJ Irv, who was able to get him a contract with Def Jam. In 1995, Ja Rule made his first appearance as a solo artist on the song “Time To Build” with Jay-Z and DMX, who were also just starting out.

When DJ Irv, now known as Irv Gotti, was granted his own sub-label from Def Jam, Murder Inc. Records, he promoted Ja Rule as his flagship artist. During this time, he appeared on Jay-Z’s 1998 hit, “Can I Get A…,” a song that was supposed to be his until Jay-Z requested it.

In 1999, he released his debut solo single, “Holla Holla,” which quickly became a hit and peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. This was followed shortly after by his debut solo album, Venni Vetti Vicci, which reached platinum status in the US.

Hitting The Big Time

Ja Rule’s second single, “Between Me and You,” was released in 2000 as the first single from his second studio album.

His second album, Rule 3:36, dropped in October 2000, and it featured a change from hardcore hip-hop to a more pop-rap style. This album proved so popular that the Recording Industry Association of America certified it triple platinum.

Not one to waste time, Ja Rule quickly released his third studio album in 2001, which topped the Billboard 200. The following year, Ja Rule released his fourth studio album, The Last Temptation, with the single “Thug Lovin,” with Bobby Brown as a guest artist.

Although FBI agents raided Murder Inc. Records in 2003, Ja Rule still released his fifth studio album, Blood in My Eye. While it was a diss album targeting rappers like 50 Cent and Eminem, it also marked his return to his hardcore hip-hop style. His sixth studio album, R.U.L.E., was released in 2004, and its lead single “Wonderful” peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Hiatus And Return

After working as hard as G Herbo with six consecutive albums, Ja Rule went on hiatus in 2005 following his greatest hits album Exodus. While he founded his own record label, Mpire Music Group, in 2007, he wouldn’t personally work on a new album of his own until 2011. After being repeatedly pushed back for tweaking, this album was eventually released as Love Is Pain 2 in 2012.

Unfortunately, Ja Rule was in the middle of a two-year prison sentence when the album was released, and he wouldn’t be released until May 2013. Once he was free, Ja Rule released a memoir titled Unruly: The Highs and Lows of Becoming a Man in 2014. The same year, he announced his eighth studio album, Coup De Grâce, which would get a 2016 release.

In 2015, he announced that he and Irv Gotti had partnered with Paramount Pictures to create a TV series based on Murder Inc.

Other Ventures

Along with being a successful rapper, Ja Rule has also appeared in several films, including Turn It Up and The Fast and the Furious. He also launched a clothing line with Irv Gotti in 2004, followed by a liquor company, The Mojito, in 2006.

In 2016, he co-founded Fyre Media, a talent booking agency that ended up at the center of the Fyre Festival scam. As if that wasn’t enough, he has also dabbled in the most expensive NFTs ever created and launched a premium wine label in 2023. Fyre Festival Lawsuit

Following the disastrous staging of the Fyre Festival in 2017, which Ja Rule had heavily promoted across his social media pages and co-founded with Billy McFarland, the rapper faced a $100 million class action lawsuit from the festival attendees. The festival, which was the subject of documentaries on Netflix and Hulu, promised a luxury experience but was plagued with poor services and hospitality.

Ja Rule was dismissed from the lawsuit in 2019 but faced an additional $2.8 million lawsuit from an investment company that won a default judgment over an unpaid loan of $3 million. The judge later ruled that only McFarland was financially responsible, allowing Rule to avoid further legal proceedings.

In 2021, 277 ticket holders received $7,220 each in compensation for the event, thanks to a US court settlement, with Rule distancing himself from all future Fyre Festival plans soon after.

Ja Rule has faced numerous legal issues over the years, including a $1,200 fine for assaulting a man in a Toronto nightclub in 2003, driving with a suspended license in 2004, and possession of drugs and a gun in 2007. This led to a two-year prison sentence in 2010, with an additional 28-month sentence imposed in 2011 for tax evasion on $3 million in earnings between 2004 and 2008.

More recently, Rule’s criminal record got the best of him as the UK denied him entry shortly before he was due to begin his 2024 tour of the country, starting in Cardiff, Wales.
