Jackson State head coach and NFL legend Deion Sanders had to have the big toe and second toe on his left foot amputated after he developed three blood clots that required surgery.

In a new video of his series, “Coach Prime,” Sanders shared the procedure with viewers. (Warning: the video below contains graphic content.)

The blood clots began in Sanders’ calf but ran the length of his leg as he developed compartment syndrome, which involves muscle pressure reaching levels that can limit the flow of blood and oxygen, USA Today reported. Doctors categorized them as life-threatening and provided Sanders a wheelchair on the sidelines for the second half of Jackson State’s season in 2021.

As a result of the surgery, Sanders, 54, also said he lost 35 pounds during his medical stay.

Before the operation, Sanders’ mother told him there were family members, along with herself, who have been diagnosed or have died from blood clots.

“They were first talking about the amputation of toes, then the amputation of my leg from knee down, and then they were trying to ensure that I had life.” Sanders said. “... It’s been a long journey. I am on the road back. But I am here and I am thankful.”

Since taking over at Jackson State, Sanders has spearheaded a transition at the school. This past season, JSU claimed their first Southwestern Athletic Conference title since 2007.

They followed that up in recruiting season when Sanders flipped the nation’s top prospect of the 2022 class, Travis Hunter.
