Introduction

James Corden is an English professional actor, comedian, and television host with an estimated net worth of $70 Million.

Before Wealth & Fame

Growing up in the small English village of Hazlemere in Buckinghamshire, James Corden wasn’t a top-performing student and preferred being the class clown. He had several jobs before becoming a successful actor and television host. He initially worked in a call center but appeared in several TV commercials and advertisements. Corden almost gave up on the entertainment industry after struggling to get acting work, but stuck it out long enough to land his breakthrough role in Fat Friends.

Television Career

In the late 1990s, James Corden began landing minor recurring roles in British television shows, including Lee in eight episodes of Out of Tune and Gareth Jones in six episodes of Boyz Unlimited. His breakout role came in 2000 when he was cast as Jamie Rymer in the British drama Fat Friends. Corden starred in four of the show’s five seasons, quickly gaining recognition for his quirky comedic personality.

This paved the way for Corden’s most prominent role in British TV. In 2007, he was cast as ‘Smithy’ in the BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey, which became one of British history’s most popular television series. The show aired for three seasons, with Corden later reprising his role in the 2019 and 2024 special episodes.

Film Career

After Gavin & Stacey’s official 2010 conclusion, James Corden transitioned to film, starring in movies such as Conference of Animals (2010), Gulliver’s Travels (2010), The Three Musketeers (2011), and Begin Again (2013). In recent years, in addition to his prominent work as a host on The Late Late Show, which we’ll get to in a second, Corden has also been heavily involved in voiceover work.

His most notable roles as a voice actor include recurring appearances in the Peter Rabbit and Trolls franchises. He was first cast as Biggie in the 2016 Trolls film, and has since reprised the role four times. This includes his 2017 appearances in the short film, Trolls: Dress Up, and the TV movie, Trolls Holiday. In 2020, he returned as Biggie in Trolls World Tour and in the spinoff, Tiny Diamond Goes Back to School.

Between the Trolls movies, Corden was cast as the titular character in Peter Rabbit (2018), the same year as the release of the short film Flopsy Turvy, and later, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (2021). However, this isn’t the full extent of his voiceover work. Other notable mentions include lending his voice to The Emoji Movie (2017), Smallfoot (2018), and 15 episodes of Curious George (2022).

The Late Late Show

In 2014, Craig Ferguson, then host of The Late Late Show, announced his departure from CBS, and the network began looking for a suitable replacement. They were seeking someone who wasn’t a stand-up comedian as such and more of an all-around entertainer, which is where Ben Winston came into the equation. Winston was the executive producer of The Late Late Show and a longtime friend of James Corden. As such, he helped Corden put together a pitch for the network and eventually land the gig.

In 2015, James began hosting The Late Late Show, serving in the role for eight seasons and over a thousand episodes (1042 to be exact) until 2022. Despite already being a successful actor in his own right, hosting The Late Late Show dramatically boosted his star power in the United States.

The Late Late Show Salary

According to reports, when James Corden first began hosting The Late Late Show in 2015, he earned between $4 million and $5 million annually. Since the show typically aired between 140 and 150 episodes per season, and per year, this equates to somewhere between $30,000 and $35,000 per episode.

In 2019, Corden’s contract with CBS came up for renewal, and his annual salary reportedly increased to $9 million/year, or roughly $65,000 per episode. The network also allegedly offered him a $50 million, multi-year contract extension in 2022, which would have been worth an estimated $12 million annually. However, Corden turned down the offer.

If we do some quick math, he likely earned the $4-$5 million sum over four years, totaling between $16 million and $20 million. Next, we have the $9 million/year over four years, totalling $36 million. This should put his combined earnings from all eight seasons somewhere between $52 million and $56 million.

The World’s Best Salary

Corden reportedly earned $350,000 per episode for the CBS reality talent competition The World’s Best, which aired for seven episodes in 2019 and earned him just under $2.5 million. Drew Barrymore also earned $350,000 per episode.
