Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Jasmin
Jasmin is a slightly altered spelling of Jasmine (it’s how the Germans spell it). Jasmine comes from the old Persian “yasamin”, which means ‘gift from God’ and refers to the flowering plant of the olive genus native to the warm temperate regions of the Old World (i.e., Afro-Eurasia). Jasmine (especially in the form of Yasmin) has long been a popular female name in the Arab world. In the United States, Jasmine has been in use since the turn of the 20th century when naming girls after flowers, trees and plants became all the rage. Consider Lily, Rose, and Iris for example. However, its increasing popularity in the last couple of decades probably owes much to the character Princess Jasmine in Disney’s movie, Aladdin (1992). The flowering plant known as the jasmine symbolizes elegance and grace, and is known for its intoxicating fragrance. As the German spelling of this feminine name, Jasmin is currently popular in both Germany and Austria. All About the Baby Name – Jasmin

Popularity
OF THE GIRL NAME JASMIN
Jasmin first appeared on the U.S. popularity charts in 1974, which is a year following Jasmine’s reappearance. Jasmine is a name that became hugely popular in America, and its rise to the top of the charts was meteoric. This made it a prime candidate for altered spellings, and Jasmin (without the “e”) is another example of this. While it is a legitimate spelling of the name in the German language, we don’t think that’s the primary drive of American parents using this form of the name. Rather, slight spelling modifications give parents the illusion that their name is different, hoping to create more originality within ultra-trendy circumstances. There are currently eight forms of this name on the charts. Most popular is the traditional English spelling of Jasmine followed by Jazmin(e). Jasmin is currently the 4th most popular spelling of this name which is collectively given to almost 9,000 baby girls per year (that’s a lot!). From an English speaking perspective, we have to say, the name just feels incomplete without the “e” on the end.Quick Facts
