Advanced SearchJames William Buffett, popularly known as Jimmy Buffett, was an American musician and songwriter best known for his hit songs ‘Margaritaville’ and ‘Come Monday’. He started his musical career as a country artiste in the 1960s, and released his first album, ‘Down to Earth’ in 1970. His music combined elements of the country, rock, and pop genres of music with coastal and tropical lyrical themes. He formed the touring and recording band of singers and songwriters called Coral Reefer Band. He released over 30 albums, of which many had been certified gold or platinum. In 2003, he bagged his first Country Music Award for his song ‘It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere’. An accomplished writer as well, Buffett wrote three best-sellers—‘Tales from Margaritaville’, ‘Where Is Joe Merchant?’ and ‘A Pirate Looks at Fifty’. With his daughter Savannah Jane Buffett, he also co-wrote two children's books—‘The Jolly Mon’ and ‘Trouble Dolls’. The multi-talented Buffett was also an actor. He made several cameo appearances in films like ‘Repo Man’, ‘Hook’, ‘Cobb’, ‘Hoot’, ‘Congo’, and ‘From the Earth to the Moon’. He produced a number of musicals, including ‘Escape to Margaritaville.’ He collaborated with novelist Herman Wouk and produced a musical based on Wouk's novel ‘Don't Stop the Carnival’. He was also a successful businessman, with two restaurant chains named after his best-known songs. As of 2023, Jimmy Buffet wasone of the world's richest musicians (net worth believed to be $1 billion).

Buffett bought a house in St Barts on the Caribbean island. He loved to travel on the East Coast on his sailboat. He enjoyed flying as well and owned a Dassault Falcon 900, a French-built corporate jet aircraft. He also owned a Boeing Stearman, Lake Amphibian, and Grumman Albatross.
Buffett was well-known for his charity work as well. In 1981, he, along with former Florida governor Bob Graham founded the Save the Manatee Club, which is the world's leading manatee protection organization. He also supported the Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory.
The singer was drawn into a controversy in 1983 when he recorded the song ‘God's Own Drunk’ for his album ‘Living and Dying in 3/4 Time’. Late entertainer Lord Buckley’s son sued him for $11 million for copyright infringement and claimed that Buffett had lifted portions of Buckley's song ‘A Tribute to Buckley’. The court, therefore, banned Buffett from performing the song at any show till the lawsuit was resolved.
In 1996, the Jamaican police shot at Buffett’s Grumman HU-16 airplane, suspecting it of smuggling marijuana. Later, the Jamaican government apologized for the mistake. Buffett composed the song ‘Jamaica Mistaica’ based on this experience.Through his hurricane relief concert called ‘Surviving the Storm’, organized in Orlando, Florida in November 2004, he raised funds for the hurricane victims in Florida.
