Can A 13-Year-Old Work?

The short answer to this is; yes, 13 -year-olds can work. However, you must stay in school, sorry! It is against the law to leave school entirely and start working a full-time job before the age of 18. Working as a 13-year-old also means you cannot work during school hours and before 7 am, and after 7 pm. You can, however, check with your local council, as some councils will allow 13-year-olds to work before and after school. To do this, you must contact your education department or education welfare department and ask what local bylaws there are for jobs for -13-year-olds.

How Many Hours Can A 13-Year-Old Work?

How many hours can a 13-year-old work is limited, because you’re still in school. How many hours you can work will vary if you’re at school or on school holidays.

During term time, you are allowed to work a maximum of 12 hours a week. This is divided into a maximum of 2 hours on school days and Sundays. On Saturdays, you can work a maximum of 5 hours.

During school holidays, you are allowed to work a maximum of 25 hours a week. This is divided into a maximum of 5 hours on weekdays and Saturdays. On Sundays, you can only work for 2 hours.

For every 4 hours, you have worked, you’re entitled to at least 1 hour break. You also must have 2 weeks off school and work once a year.

What Jobs Can You Get at 13?

There are a lot of jobs you can get at 13! However, you must remember that in the eyes of the law, you’re still a child, and unfortunately, that means you are not entitled to employment rights. But, there are rules that are in place just for 13-year-olds;

• You cannot work in a factory or any industrial estate.
• You cannot work in a pub or betting shops, or a workplace that has an age limit of 18 and above.
• You cannot work in an environment that may harm your health or your well-being or your education.

As long as you don’t do these three things, you can pretty much work anywhere! You could find a job working in your local corner shop, doing a paper round or even helping an older person in their home. Just make sure you’re not working too long or during school hours.
