Add to basketFirst edition. First edition, first issue, Amory's state 1(b) of the title page (the traditional first state), dated 1667 and with Milton's name spelled in full and in larger type than "London" of imprint." Finely bound by Riviere in full brown morocco gilt, paneled sides with center, corner and other ornaments, spine gilt, all edges gilt. Housed in a cloth folding case. Near Fine, lacking preliminary blank; printer's error in the paper at foot of M2 affecting portions of the bottom two lines on both sides; small marginal repair on T4; some line-borders cropped at top; headline on V4 recto also cropped; lower margin repaired on Vv1 affecting the printed border rule at foot. A few notes in light pencil on rear endpaper. Small bookplates of noteworthy collectors George Goyder and William A. Strutz on paste down. The title exists in at least six states, of which the present state has been traditionally recognized as the first. Of the numerous theories attempting to explain the sequence of these variants over the centuries, Amory presents a reasonable (albeit initially counter-intuitive) case for priority belonging to the title page with the future date of 1668 and Milton's initials, corresponding to how Simons registered the work on 20 August 1667. See Hugh Amory, "Things Unattempted Yet: A bibliography of the first edition of Paradise lost," in The Book Collector, Spring 1983, pp. 41-66 (1b). The 1667 titles like this one, according to him, were used when the authorized 1668 titles were exhausted. Grolier English 33; Grolier Wither to Prior 599; Hayward 72; Pforzheimer 716 (giving priority to the setting with "Milton" smaller than "London" in imprint); Wing M2138. This famous epic poem made its appearance at an unfortunate time. London had barely recovered from the Plague of 1665 (during which eighty printers had died, wherein is seen another reason for the difficulty in finding a publisher), and the great district devastated by the Fire was still only partly rebuilt. It was not surprising that the 1200 copies which are thought to have made the first edition did not have a brisk sale" (Grolier, English). For centuries it has been considered Milton's masterpiece and a cornerstone of English poetry. It retells the fall of Satan as well as the banishment of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.

Add to basketVery Rare LARGE PAPER COPY of The First "Collected" Edition. A sammelband of the poems of Milton. This copy comprised of the sheets of the large paper 1688 printing of the first illustrated edition of PARADISE LOST. A POEM IN TWELVE BOOKS with a 1695 reissued title-page for this edition; PARADISE REGAIN'D. A POEM. IN IV BOOKS. To whiich is added SAMSON AGONISTES, A DRAMATICK POEM. [these with the 1688 Title-Pages included, Printed by R.E.MDLXXXVIII and for Randal Taylor.MDCLXXXVIII ] and with the large paper issuance of the first printing of the NOTES [by Patrick Hume]as well as the additional "POEMS". Engraved portrait frontispiece and the 12 copperplate engravings by Burg after Medina used in the first illustrated edition of 1688. Folio, very fine full early calf Farquhar, the covers decorated with double gilt fillet and stippled lines and corner tools and elaborately tooled gilt turnovers, the spine sometime restored and very handsomely decorated incorporating fine tooling and strapwork in gilt and with a morocco lettering label gilt. (5ff.), 343, an original sheet listing some subscribers to the original 1688 edition, [3] the table, 321 [the notes], 66, 60. A fine, crisp and clean copy throughout, the binding in excellent condition, the refurbished spine panel beautifully restored expertly and sympathetically. RARE LARGE PAPER COPY OF THIS EXCEEDINGLY IMPORTANT EDITION, THE FIRST OF THE COLLECTED WORKS WITH ORIGINAL 1688 LARGE PAPER SHEETS INCLUDED. Edward Hodnett considered this to be the "earliest serious effort to illustrate an important work of English poetry" (Five Centuries of English Book Illustration, 1988, p. 63), and the copperplate engravings have a dramatic power that was only matched 200 years later by John Martin. We rarely encounter a collection of the three principal poems. This collection which includes the POEMS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS and the NOTES ON MILTON'S PARADISE LOST, can be truly classified as the first collected edition and a wonderful sammelband preserved through time by highly appreciative collectors. Such collections are rare. This collected edition is augmented by the inclusion of the highly important NOTES ON MILTON'S PARADISE LOST, POEMS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS and additional poems as well. In PARADISE LOST, PARADISE REGAINED and SAMSON AGONISTES Milton revived the heroic verse of Homer and Virgil to frame the tale of Satan and Paradise that has become the best-known epic poem written in English. He had difficulty in finding a publisher because of the plague of 1665, which killed many pressmen, and the Great Fire of the following year, which destroyed many printing housesand those publishers who were still operating were wary of the project because of Milton's anti-Restoration sympathies. Simmons, to whom he finally came, drove a hard bargain, and according to the agreement reached and the number of copies sold Milton was paid a total of £15. Milton's work survives and is revered to this day as amongst the most significant poetry and prose ever penned and additionally important, at a defining moment in the development of the English language. A truly towering figure, Milton remains one of the most celebrated and analyzed poets in English literature. Dryden described 'Paradise Lost' as 'one of the greatest, most noble and sublime poems which either this age or nation has produced,' while Blake, keying in on the poem's heretical implications, described Milton as 'a true Poet, and of the Devil's party without knowing it.'.

A lovely example expertly repaired and retaining the original rear mottled calf board. Before his death Milton had reorganised the work into 12 books, consciously adopting the division used by Virgil in the Aeneid, and thereby making 'explicit the parallel with the epics of classical antiquity' to which he had always aspired (ODNB). With the oft omitted frontispiece portrait of Milton by William Dolle, as well as the prefatory note on 'The Verse' making the case for 'English Heroic Verse without Rime, as that of Homer in Greek, and of Virgil in Latin', and the short commendatory poem by Milton's friend, the noted metaphysical poet and satirist Andrew Marvel, defending his 'sublime' use of blank verse. Published in London in 1688, by Miles Flesher for Jacob Tonson. Engraved Frontispiece with an additional 11 full page engravings (Lacking an engraving). Fourth Edition; First Illustrated Edition. Binding measures 13.75 by 8 1/2 inches in a modern half leather binding with marbled boards. Pages measure approximately 13.25" x 8.25" (34cm x 21cm). Possibly the large paper copy, also carrying the watermark of grapes on the title and at least one other page. Text is continuous despite erratic pagination; one of three imprint variants of this edition. Frontis portrait (plate) of the author signed: R. White sculp. Some plates signed by M. Burghers and Peter Paul Bouche. The most important work by one of England's most important poets - with striking and beautiful large format engraved illustrations. The publisher also included an engraving of Milton, with a verse by John Dryden comparing him to the great Roman and Greek epic poets. The book was sold at a high price to 500 subscribers, who are listed at the back of the book to give it additional distinction. The title page is laid down on a contemporary page which matches the rest of the book. At the bottom of the spine there is an embossed date of 1788, an unfortunate binder's error as the title page date clearly states 1688 in Roman Numerals (MDCLXXXVIII). Add to basketRare second edition of Miltonâs masterpiece, âone of the greatest works of the human imaginationâ (DNB). Small octavo, bound in three quarter leather over marbled boards with gilt titles and stamping to the spine in six compartments within raised bands. Revised and augmented by the author, the number of books has been extended from ten to twelve by dividing Books VII and X into two each. According to Milton's nephew, Edward Phillips, these changes were made atÂMilton's direction and were among the last literary labors undertaken by him. In very good condition. First published in 1667, âParadise Lost is generally conceded to be one of the greatest poems in the English language; and there is no religious epic in English which measures up to Miltonâs masterpiece⦠Milton performed an artistâs service to his Godâ (Magill, 511, 515). The present issue includes Milton's defense of "the Verse." Simmons's note to the reader states that he had procured this explanation from Milton because readers of the poem had "stumbled" on first encountering it, asking "why the Poem Rimes not." Milton's strident defense of blank verse (unrhymed iambic pentameter) is printed in large type that fills two pages. His chosen meter, although no longer fashionable by 1667, was the dominant mode of Shakespeare's plays and is the closest to the natural rhythms of English speech. Samuel Johnson later commented sarcastically that, "finding blank verse easier than rhyme, [Milton] was desirous of persuading himself that it is better" [Morgan Library].

The 1st illustrated edition of 1688, 4th in total, "Adorn'd with Sculptures," as the title page states. Mis-paginated, as is customary for this edition, a printer's error numbering pgs. 251-297 as 151-197, with normal pagination resuming after that. An engraved frontispiece of Milton, with 12 additional full page engravings, 1 at the beginning of each of the 12 books, by many of the most famous engravers in England at that time. The pages were trimmed at one point, likely to fit the current binding, and the text edges gilded; all engravings are present, but most have had the outermost 1/4 inch or so trimmed. Also, the frontispiece through page 4 have been removed and re-laid on matching paper, as well as the last leaf of the concluding index of 500 of the "Names of the Nobility and Gentry, that Encourag'd, by Subscription, the Printing this Edition." An historic production of Milton's towering and arguably most audacious work, an Italian copy of which was secreted away in the Vatican's prohibited books department until 1940, and had critics like Eliot arguing into the '60s that Milton had done terrible damage to the English language.

John Milton, Paradise Lost A rare 17th-century printing of John Milton s most famous work, Paradise Lost paired with Paradise Regained . Paradise Lost follows the biblical story of the Fall of Man and the temptation of Adam and Eve. Milton himself states that purpose for this book was to Justify the ways of God to Men . It covers the characters Adam, Eve, and Satan and the roles each played in the development of religious culture and idolatry. It was critically acclaimed and well-received by many famed personalities, including Samuel Johnson who states. [Paradise Lost shows] Milton s peculiar power to astonishand he seems to have been well acquainted with his own genius, and to know what it was the Nature had bestowed upon him more bountifully than upon others: the power of displaying the vast, illuminating the splendid, enforcing the awful, darkening the gloomy, and aggravating the dreadful. (title), 321, [1] (blank) pp. Not unattractive modern smooth half calf and marbled boards, raised bands, gilt titling (hinges reinforced and corners repaired). With engraved frontispiece portrait of Milton. A Large Paper Copy. Bookplate of the Fox Pointe Collection laid in at front. Wing H-3663; ESTC R12702. âPaper boards a bit chafed, but the restored binding solid, with a lustrous spine. Title page and margins of frontispiece a little soiled, minor browning (more pronounced, though never severe, in a couple of quires), vague wrinkling to final few leaves, but a very agreeable copy, generally clean and definitely fresh internally, with extremely ample margins. Published by Tonson alongside his sixth edition of "Paradise Lost," this is the first printing of the first exhaustive commentary on that poem, a line-by-line textual analysis that is still valued today. According to DNB, "It is the work of an extremely well-educated scholar who can put a solid knowledge of Hebrew, Greek, Latin, French, Italian, Dutch, and Anglo-Saxon to the task of analysing scripture sources, classical allusions, and etymological implications. Alongside this erudition, Hume offers accessible and enthusiastic paraphrases and expansions of Milton's sense, sometimes in verse." Hume took the biblical commentaries of the 17th century as a model, and his work in turn influenced the methods and style of later commentators on secular literature. Generations of Milton scholars benefited from his work, including Joseph Callander, who plagiarized great portions for his 1750 edition, and Dr. Thomas Newton, whose 1749 edition was considered definitive and who observed that Hume was both the first and "the most copious annotator." Hume (fl. 1695) has but one other known work, "A Poem Dedicated to the Immortal Memory of Her Late Majesty the Most Incomparable Q. Mary," published the same year as the present volume. He may have been related to the family of Scottish poet and courtier Sir Patrick Hume of Polwarth (ca. 1550 - 1609), but nothing further is known of him. Our copy was in the distinguished collection of early English books amassed by Howard and Linda Knohl for their library at Fox Pointe Manor. While occasionally appearing on the market as part of the 1695 edition of the "Works," this first printing of these first substantial remarks about Milton's epic is very rarely seen as a stand-alone volume.
