Joker 4K Blu-ray
Posted December 3, 2019 04:43 PM by
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Todd Phillips' action thriller Joker (2019), starring Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, and Marc Maron. The two releases will be available for purchase on January 7. Studio description: Director Todd Phillips' "Joker" centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips' exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham's fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study. Three-time Oscar nominee Phoenix ("The Master," "Walk the Line," "Gladiator") stars in the titular role alongside Oscar winner Robert De Niro ("Raging Bull," "The Godfather: Part II") as Franklin. The film also stars Zazie Beetz ("Deadpool 2"), Frances Conroy (TV's "American Horror Story," Hulu's "Castle Rock"), Marc Maron (TV's "Maron," "GLOW"), Bill Camp ("Red Sparrow," "Molly's Game"), Glenn Fleshler (TV's "Billions," "Barry"), Shea Whigham ("First Man," "Kong: Skull Island"), Brett Cullen ("42," Netflix's "Narcos"), Douglas Hodge ("Red Sparrow," TV's "Penny Dreadful") and Josh Pais (upcoming "Motherless Brooklyn," "Going in Style"). Oscar nominee Phillips ("Borat," "The Hangover" trilogy) directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Oscar-nominated writer Scott Silver ("The Fighter"), based on characters from DC. The film is produced by Phillips and Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper ("A Star Is Born," "American Sniper") under their Joint Effort banner, and Oscar nominee Emma Tillinger Koskoff ("The Wolf of Wall Street"). It is executive produced by Michael E. Uslan, Walter Hamada, Aaron L. Gilbert, Joseph Garner, Richard Baratta, and Bruce Berman. Behind the scenes, Phillips is joined by director of photography Lawrence Sher ("Godzilla: King of the Monsters," "The Hangover" trilogy), production designer Mark Friedberg ("Selma," "The Amazing Spider-Man 2"), editor Jeff Groth ("War Dogs," "The Hangover Part III"), and Oscar-winning costume designer Mark Bridges ("Phantom Thread," "The Artist"). The music is by Hildur Guðnadóttir ("Sicario: Day of the Soldado"). Warner Bros. Pictures Presents, in Association with Village Roadshow Pictures, in Association with BRON Creative, a Joint Effort Production, a Film by Todd Phillips, "Joker." Special Features and Technical Specs:

One of the best movies of the year. A great character thriller on its own while also being true to the comic book character it's based on. A brilliant meeting between arthouse cinema and comic book filmmaking. Day one.

I thought the film was severely overrated. It was "Meh" at best. However, Joaquin Phoenix's performance was fantastic. My friends birthday is later in the week so I'll pick it for him as a gift. Otherwise I wouldn't waste my money.

I love Joaquin Phoenix, he was great in this, but his performance, to me, was just "The Master" with less depth. Great direction/cinematography, weak acting (save JP), cliched script. I'm gonna get it, but this is just another exercise in style over substance.

Take a few scenes from The King of Comedy...a few from Taxi Driver...and the scenes that feature Heath Ledger from The Dark Knight...blend them together...and you get Joker. Oh, well. I'll probably pick it up one year from now (on a Black Friday sale).

You know, for a movie that made soooooo much money, I’m surprised that Warner Bros. is skimping on the extras and just have 4 featurettes. No deleted scenes, no commentary. You’d think that they would dress this release to the nines with all kinds of bells and whistles, not just bells.

Probably the film of the year. And rightfully so... FANTASTIC film in every conceivable way. Unashamed to admit I saw it five times in theaters. I'm a little bummed Warner didn't go with a pre-Christmas release date, but I'm still stoked. Already pre-ordered the 4K Steelbook.

Didn't really care for much of the film at all and found the themes a little confused, but I'm super happy a film like this exists. I don't like the weird underdog narrative some of its fans have built around the film (it was 100% always gonna be a success, it's a Batman spinoff), but I love that a small-scale comic book film with no action setpieces and no release in China can find the level of success that this film did.

Day 1 buy for sure. Finally got around to seeing it in theaters a week ago or so. It was great. Easily overrated, but I won't hold that against it. Liked the movie and all and will be snagging the 4K for sure, but, yeah, it's definitely overrated. The pre-release hype from critics was 100% crazy and made it sound like it was the greatest movie of all time. Also, the comparisons to Ledger in The Dark Knight are ludicrous. Phoenix was really good, if not great, but not even close to Ledger. Just stop it with that nonsense already.

Butthurt incels can't understand why it's the best leftist film of the year... Joker has been marginalised by the right-wing powers that be and decides to take the matter in his own hands and ends up sparking a multi-racial/gender uprising of the working class against those forces including the fascist known as Thomas Wayne. Joker himself is very much a absurdist/egoist anarchist to his very core.

Finally a release date! Definitely echo the surprise of a sparse extras list. For a film that had a lot to say and had others saying a lot about it, not to even have a commentary is surprising.

I avoided JOKER for several weeks as I thought it was just another “comic book movie”. Then, after reading various reviews and many comments on this site, I went to see it. Of course, JP blew me away again, and I ended up seeing the film multiple times. Hell, it’s a great flick, and I sure hope he finally gets the Oscar he should have gotten for THE MASTER. Bravo. Great cinematography and score as well btw. Gotta be day one for me. Period.

Are they still making DVDs? Why? They went under when blu-ray won the format war in 2006. It's gonna be 2020 in a few weeks. Come on people, if you have friends or family who still watch a DVD player, please consider gifting them a cheap blu-ray player. It's time to put a fork in DVD and put the format out to pasture where it belongs.

@davidthenikonuser Because people are clueless. If they don't stop making DVDs people will still be buying them in 2050. And it's not because they are cheaper that they buy them. It's literally because they are clueless. I watch people all the time just walk down aisles at Best Buy just randomly grabbing movies without even LOOKING at what format it is. In fact, this Black Friday i saw some idiot grabbing movies and they had a whole handful of a mix of DVDs, blus and 4Ks. He was holding up a 4K copy of Rocketman and said to his wife "Look, they have Rocketman on DVD". Absolutely cringe worthy. DVDs should have been put to extinction a long long time ago.

Larry Davis: Do you think that Martin Scoresese's Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy are "leftist" films...? (I'm not picking a fight; I'm just curious.) I think that Todd Phillips' Joker shares more in common with Scorsese's films than any leftist ideology or leftist political agenda. At the end of the day, the Joker is a comic book villain in the D.C. Comic Book Universe -- not a "poster boy" or a "symbol" for "The Left." I don't see Phillips' Joker as a political statement. I see it as an homage to Scorsese's films: Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. (De Niro, anyone?)
IanSchultz23
Dec 07, 2019
Comic Book adaptations can't be political? what a naive view. I would say both of those Scorsese films are political films and Joker also has a lot of Network in there as well... which I think nobody would disagree is most certainly a left-wing wing.
Top reviewer
Sopranogl
Dec 07, 2019
I forgot about Network.... Yes, comic book movies can be political...but Phillips' Joker is no more "leftist" than Nolan's The Dark Knight. Ledger's Joker burns a pile of money, if you recall, in Nolan's film. Was THAT a leftist act? He aslo declares himself to be an "agent of chaos." The character is an anarchist if there ever was one. Are you also willing to call The Dark Knight a leftist film -- as well as The Dark Knight Rises?
IanSchultz23
Dec 07, 2019
Joker’s politics are way more overt and deals with the concept that The Waynes are fascists. Being a “agent of chaos” is not what anarchism is about, read up on it.

Honestly...I don't really like comic book movies. I think that the VAST MAJORITY OF THEM are intended for kids (or for adults who want to be kids). I enjoyed Joaquin Pheonix, though, in Phillips' Joker. I think that he is an excellent actor -- and I was happy to see a movie for adults. On a similar note, I think that Pheonix is great in The Master and in Inherent Vice -- among others. This comments section is NOT going to get "locked" as long as we remain civil (and I don't think that anyone crossed any lines here).

I know I'm in the minority but I thought this was just........ok. I've been trying, but for the life of me I can't wrap my head around all of the hype surrounding it. It was entertaining enough to hold my attention during its duration, but definitely not a film that warrants a repeat viewing in the foreseeable future. If, in a few years I see it in a discount bargain bin for cheap, I "may" pick it up. But this didn't "wow" me by any means what-so-ever. Just my $0.02.

Certainly I am in the minority here. While I liked the film, I didn't love it. I have no need to see it again so I won't be buying it. After watching this empty, superficial excuse for a "thought-provoking" movie, I felt the need of rewatching The King of Comedy for the first time in 35 years. One thing is homage and a very different one is straight plagiarism. The only thing Philips left out was the mesage: without killing anybody, Pupkin is a disturbingly dangerous character. I had to make a conscious effort in order to finish watching it. The joker, instead, is disgustingly portrayed as a victim of society because to secure your pity. Left-wing fascist propaganda.

Great character study. I think it is more interesting than the films it pays homage to (which thousands of movies do without saying so). I’m pretty sure that’s how Scorsese himself got involved. The politics are definitely background dressing in this film, and I don’t believe that it paints Antifa or the right-wing SJW protest related groups as good or bad, only that they are causing anarchy. That’s just what Gotham is. I like the perspective of the somewhat intimate portrayal of a naive character who accidentally became a symbol of a group he doesn’t share any ideals with, and how it anchors itself in the 3rd act to the world of Gotham we (as movie goers) can recognize.
