Despite her father’s unwillingness to let her study theatre, DeWitt went on to earn her bachelor's degree on the subject from Ball State University. After graduating from University of California in 1974, she worked as a legal secretary before starting her career on television, and eventually, in films. She made her television debut in 1975 in an episode of ‘Baretta’. Two years later, she joined the main cast of the sitcom ‘Three's Company’ as Janet Wood, a role she played until 1984. Soon after the show ended, she was featured in an episode of ‘Finder of Lost Loves’ after which she quit acting for many years.The actress resumed acting in 1991 with a role in a production of ‘Noises Off’ at the Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse.
