Before Wealth & Fame

Born into an academic family, both of Jude Law’s parents were drama school teachers in London, and naturally, this helped ignite his passion for the Theatre. At just six years old, Jude joined London’s National Youth Music Theatre and performed in stage productions while in school. He dropped out of high school at just 16 years old to pursue his professional acting career. However, before making it big in the acting industry, Law worked various menial jobs, such as in a warehouse and washing dishes in restaurants. He also shared an apartment with fellow actor Ewan McGregor, who was also beginning the pursuit of his acting career.

Acting Career

Jude Law’s professional acting career began in the final two years of the 1980s, when he appeared in two short movies, The Ragged Child (1988) and The Tailor of Gloucester (1989). At the time, he was still a teenager and worked the aforementioned jobs to support himself. This continued in the early 1990s, landing just two minor roles in the TV shows The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes and Families.

Things began picking up towards the mid-late 1990s, and Law consistently landed more prominent roles in film. This included leading roles in films such as Shopping (1994), Wilde (1997), Gattaca (1997), and The Wisdom of Crocodiles (1998).

In the 2000s, Jude Law began landing breakout roles in high-budget movies. These roles included the voice of Lemony Snicket in A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) and the supporting role as Graham in The Holiday, working alongside actors such as Cameron Diaz, Jack Black, and Kate Winslet. However, perhaps the most iconic role of his career arrived in 2009, starring as Dr. John Watson alongside Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes. He reprised this role in the 2011 sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
