joe citizen J Ive got a 96 4wd T100. The truck was running fine, I parked it and two hours later I was planning on going to the store but it wouldnt start. The engine doesnt turn over at all nor are there any clicks from the engine when I try to start in. The battery is new so that is not the problem. Im guessing there is probably something wrong with the starter or soleniod and Im wondering how I would try to jump start the starter soleniod to see if thats the problem. #1 · Jul 14, 2009 Ive got a 96 4wd T100. I guess you could tap the starter with something... :D Is this a manual or auto transmission? If this is an auto, did you make sureit was all the way in park? Have you tried it in neutral? ;) #3 · Jul 14, 2009 It's an automatic. I tried it in park and I tried it in neutral. The lights and everything will come on full force and will stay on if you try to start the engine but it just doesnt crank over at all and there is no clicking whatsoever. I was thinking it might be the solenoid and was going to try to jump it to test it out but looking at the starter/solenoid Im not sure what I would be jumping as it doesnt look like the old style Im used to. #4 · Jul 15, 2009 Starter contacts. #5 · Jul 15, 2009 Give the starter a good tap and see if it will start. If it works, then it's the contacts fer sure... :D #6 · Jul 15, 2009 Well I gave it a few taps and that didnt do anything so I borrowed my neighbors multimeter just to see how many volts the starter was getting and its around 12.65 volts. #7 · Jul 15, 2009 It could be yer neutral switch on the trans...looks like you need to check fer continuity on 5 and 6 when it's in park or neutral. It should have continuity when it's in those positions. I'd still check yer wiring connections on the starter...especially the ground. :D #8 · Jul 16, 2009 To check the solenoid/starter, turn the ign sw to the RUN position. Connect a fairly heavy gauge wire (18 or heavier) to the battery + terminal Then touch the other end to the solenoid terminal. If all is OK the solenoid should click and the starter should turn. #10 · Nov 17, 2020 Hello, I am having the same issue, no clicking when turning the key. Anyway, which one (cable) is the solenoid terminal (on my1995 T100 3.4 V6 Manual)? 0 Reply #9 · Jul 20, 2009 (Edited) I am going to play captain obvious and ask did you check for power on all the fuses? use a test light and verify power? also put the key in start and ratchet the gear selector from P to 1 and back see if it makes any attempt. Verify the starter trigger wire is in place? check the fusible link form the battery to the fuse box under the hood? to jump start the solenoid a 12 guage or better wire from the 12 volt started power and over to the trigger very short run and the the starter should throw the gear and spin. #11 · Nov 17, 2020 Power from the battery to the AM1 (40A fuse) to the starter relay (white wire). The starter solenoid hot wire should be black/white stripe. This is energized when the starter relay (located under the dash) is activated by the black wire (pin 5) from the NSS. The hot wire to the NSS is a black/orange stripe wire (pin 6) and is energized when the ignition key is turned to the START position. This in turn energizes the starter relay and allows power from the relay to continue on to the starter solenoid. ;) Before you start replacing parts, you'll need to trace the power to see where it's not passing through and verify that's the part that's the issue. ;) #12 · Nov 18, 2020 Thanks Bam, I am somewhat a "rookie" with electrical stuff, I have to look for a good wiring diagram with pics to help me during testing. I already have a voltmeter... 0 Reply Insert Quotes Post Reply
