Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name June
June is the English vocabulary word signifying the sixth month of the year and the month in which summer commences. The word is borrowed from the Latin “junius” (also indicating the month of June) and was given in honor of the Roman goddess Juno. In Roman mythology, Juno was the wife of Jupiter (their Greek equivalents were Hera and Zeus). In other words, Juno was the Queen of the Roman gods and goddesses. When her husband Jupiter created his daughter Minerva (Greek: Athena) without her help (Minerva sprung fully grown from Jupiter’s head), Juno was so jealous that she gave birth to Mars (god of war) by herself. Seen as the ultimate matriarch of the Romans, the month of June (once called Junonius) was named after the high goddess of heavens and protectress of marriage. This is why June is considered the most favorable month for weddings. The ancient etymology of Juno is less certain but is said to mean “youthful” (which would make sense since the immortal goddess was perpetually youthful). All About the Baby Name – June

June is another example of an old-fashioned name enjoying a bit of a revival right now (although not as much as Emma, Olivia or Chloe). Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s it was a fashionable trend to use months, flowers, trees and gemstones when naming baby daughters. By the end of the 20th century, this naming style had become passé. Now suddenly it’s back with a vengeance and June is coming along for the ride. June was a Top 100 favorite girl’s name for over 25 years and covering the period between 1915 and 1942. The height of her popularity came in 1925 when June was the 39th most popular female name in America. Her fame would peter out in the latter half of the 20th century and June fell off the charts completely in 1987 – no longer on anyone’s radar. The name only recently returned to the charts in 2008 and has so far shown a favorable trend upwards. April is still more popular, but May has yet to return (although parents have brought back Mae). June is a simple one-syllable name, but one which is loaded with “youthful” blossoming life. The name has understated beauty and conjures up images of sweetness and hopefulness. It doesn’t matter what month of the year your baby girl is born; June is universally appealing (especially for winter babies in our opinion). A sweet little June-bug.Quick Facts

Literary Characters
OF THE BABY NAME JUNE
Ok. So it’s not exactly literature. But it’s June Cleaver. We LOVE June Cleaver, Everymom, and we LOVED Barbara Billingsley for playing her to a T. In the 1950s situation comedy, Leave It to Beaver, June is the wife of Ward, a businessman of some indeterminate category, and the mother of Wally and the unfortunately named “Beaver”, for some reason a nickname for Theodore (what happened to good old “Ted”?). Anyway, our June is a wonder to behold – her house is immaculate, her meals are delicious and timely, her motherly advice is warm and gentle and one presumes her marital relations are above reproach, twin beds notwithstanding. All this is accomplished in dresses, high heels, pearls and perfectly coiffed hair. Of course, all this has been noted before by one wit or another, but not, we may assure you, in the 1950s. Then it was taken seriously, and many was the frazzled housefrau who saw herself falling woefully short of the mark; many was the envious child who wondered why his mother bore no resemblance to the lovely June. Now we know that it was all a sham, a dirty, pinko Communist plot to keep us grounded in our Eisenhower fog, but then – we believed! And some of us didn’t catch on until the lady herself came out of the closet in the 1980 movie, Airplane, to prove she could jive with the best of them.Childrens Books
