ORIGIN Edit Justin Gatlin is an American sprinter and one time Olympic gold medalist. He was born to parents Willie and Jeanette on February 10, 1982 in Brooklyn, New York. Gatlin grew up in Pensacola, Florida where he attended Woodham High School. He was awarded an athletic scholarship by the University of Tennessee.

CAREER Gatlin started out as a hurdler during his high school years. He transitioned to sprinting in 2000 with the aid of two University of Tennessee coaches. Gatlin went on to win six consecutive NCAA sprint titles. His career was put on hold in 2001 after he tested positive for amphetamines. He was slapped with a two year ban by the International Association of Athletics Federations. The ban was reduced to one year following a successful appeal.

Gatlin made his professional debut in 2002. He was awarded a lucrative endorsement deal by Nike that same year. Gatlin competed and won gold, silver and bronze at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. He also won gold for the 100-meter and the 200-meter at the 2005 World Championships. Gatlin picked up a four year ban in 2006 after testing positive for testosterone. His world record of 9.77s in the 100-meter was annulled as a result. He was reinstated in summer 2010. Gatlin won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games behind Jamaica’s Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake. He’s scheduled to compete at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
