K-State partnering with CNN Newsource

Submitted by Andrew Smith

Kansas State University is now a CNN Newsource in the Classroom affiliate. This new affiliation gives student journalists at K-State access to CNN's vast library of worldwide news materials for use in student broadcasts, as well as giving student reporters a chance to send their work to be shared with CNN affiliates around the world.

"This is a great opportunity for our student journalists to have another resource at their fingertips as they cover the issues that affect the viewers of the greater Manhattan area," said Andrew Smith, multimedia news director for the Arthur Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications. "Also, when news breaks in Manhattan, students covering news with national interest could also get their work seen around the country as part of our trade agreement. It's a great introduction to the business of mass media newsgathering as they prepare to enter the industry."

JMC Interim Director Jean Folkerts is also excited to see this new partnership, and recognizes this big step between K-State's academic instruction and the journalism industry. "This is a great example of how the A.Q. Miller School leverages its national connections to benefit students and to make use of all resources available," Folkerts said. "This kind of interaction advances our students' employment opportunities and acquaints them with real-world action."

Students now have access to video feeds of national and worldwide breaking news to compliment the award-winning local reporting performed by members of the Channel 8 student staff. With download and upload capabilities in the newsroom in Dole Hall on the K-State campus, incorporation of the feeds into programming will enhance the breadth of news coverage.

CNN Newsource is a service owned by Turner Broadcasting that conglomerates video from its affiliate network around the world to license for use on the air for affiliate stations. The network's classroom affiliation program has more than 100 university affiliates across the United States. As an affiliate, K-State will have the same rights to download and use CNN video to enrich broadcasts as professional network affiliates.
