My doctor prescribed me Keflex for a random infection I got on my leg. I told her I was nursing and she said it was fine and that she would prescribe anything to nursing mothers that she would prescribe to a baby. I looked it up on LactMed and while there is limited information, there have been reports of diarrhea and thrush in infants. Has anyone taken Keflex while breastfeeding and did your baby have any reaction? Was there any effect on your milk supply?8 CommentsNewest FirstOldest Firstccabmama29@KylersWorld,

I don't know about keflex and breastfeeding specifically, but you can expect thrush and diarrhea as a side effect for any antibiotic you take while BFing LO. When I took antibiotics LO had a couple days of looser green stools.ccabmama29@cabmama29,

I took Keflex with no issues. You might want to take a probiotic while on it. LO didn't have any issues that I recall but, it was almost a year ago when he a newborn. If you haven't already, download the LactMed app.llroxy2@KylersWorld,

I'm going through this right now. I'm taking Keflex for a UTI and my LO had diarrhea for 2 days. It didn't affect my supply at all.KKylersWorld@lroxy2,

Thanks for the response. Hearing these responses makes me super hesitant to take the antibiotics. I called my doc to see if there's anyway to hold off on taking the antibiotics for now or if it's critical to take them right away. I'm waiting to hear back. :/KKeyToMyHeart@KylersWorld,

I was on Keflex for 2 weeks for mastitis which turned into an abscess. This was prescribed by my midwife and the surgeon who drained the abscess. My lil gal didn't have any adverse reactions.SSeaWarrior@KylersWorld,

I took keflex when my son was a newborn as well, and didn't notice any difference in his diapers. I did get thrush in my breasts soon after, but keflex was only one of the three strong antibiotics I had to take for an infection in my csection incision, so I'm sure it was a side effect of the combined antibiotics. My son didn't get oral thrush or a yeast infection. I agree that any antibiotic is going to list diarrhea and yeast infection as possible side effects because it kills all bacteria, including the good, and it throws off the body's natural gut health. You can take probiotics to try to counteract the medication.ppugmuffins1

Babies can take Keflex. Typically if it's safe for baby to take themselves it's safe for you to take while breastfeeding. Diarrhea, thrush and yeast infections are typical side effects of any antibiotic.
