Kendra is a name whose etymology is up for debate. As a relatively recent creation, most believe that Kendra was developed from the Welsh male name Kendrick, itself derived from a surname Cynwrig. Apparently, this name comes from the Celts meaning ‘wise ruler’ or ‘high hill.’ It may also be derived from an Olde English personal name Cēnerīc (from “cēne” meaning ‘keen’ and “rīc” meaning ‘power’). Lastly, it could be a simple marriage between the names Kenneth and Sandra. The name was primarily coined in the United States in the latter half of the 20th century.

The name showed backwards momentum on the charts all through the 1990s and into the early 21st century. It’s interesting to note that Kendra got a little boost back up the charts between 2005 and 2007 likely influenced by Kendra Wilkinson, a reality TV character in “The Girl’s Next Door.” She was Hugh Hefner’s beautiful, sporty and endearingly goofy girlfriend. The show’s popularity probably served to remind American parents of this adorably energetic name. Kendra is a pretty, modern, cheerful and unpretentious choice for a little girl.
