In 2006, he signed a development deal with Def Jam Records and was featured on two of The Game’s singles. However, the label ultimately let him go after an encounter with Jay-Z, for which he said he “wasn’t ready.”

Breaking Into The Industry

Despite being let go by the label, Kendrick Lamar began touring with The Game in 2009, after which he released his eponymous EP. He then negotiated with Warner/Chappell Music and released the mixtape Overly Dedicated in 2010. This tape caught the attention of Dr. Dre, who contacted Lamar to have him work with Snoop Dogg on his album Detox.

Dre also signed Lamar to his label, Aftermath Entertainment, after being encouraged by J. Cole and other artists. Lamar released his debut album, Section.80, in 2011, which peaked at no. 113 on the Billboard 200 chart.

In 2016, he released his first compilation album, Untitled Unmastered, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and became a critical success. His fourth album, Damn, was released in 2017, and he headlined the Coachella Valley Music Festival soon after. Damn became his most commercially successful album, spending four weeks at the top of the Billboard 200.
