FRANKFORT, Ky. (WCHS) — The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources marked the 25th anniversary of elk restoration by releasing information about the 2022 hunting season.
Applications for this year’s elk draw will be available through April 30 and hunting season runs from Sept. 10 to Jan. 4.
The Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg has hosted an annual event that corresponds with the drawing since 2018. This year’s draw will kick off Friday May 13 with a concert, vendors, food and educational programming. Licensure will be determined by a random drawing and winners be announced at the event via livestream on Saturday May 14.
“Interest in elk hunting in Kentucky grows each year, and we expect that trend to continue as word spreads,” said John Hast, a coordinator for the department. “Last year we issued 594 permits after receiving more than 90,000 entries to the elk hunt draw for a second straight year.”
Elk were reintroduced to the Commonwealth in 1997, about 150 years since the last elk was spotted. Being near the top of the food chain, elk seem to be thriving. Kentucky’s herd is the largest east of the Rocky Mountains, according to a news release from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. The department reports Kentucky’s herd inhabits more than 4 million acres in 16 counties.
Gabe Jenkins has coordinated deer and elk programs in the past and currently serves in the information and education division of the department.
“The success of the elk restoration effort is truly remarkable,” Jenkins said. “The benefits touch many aspects of our life and lands from biodiversity enriching our ecosystem, to generating funds, to extending our efforts in other areas, to creating valuable experiences for resident and tourist hunters.”
Applications for permits are available online and hunters can apply for three permits types per year.
For information about the elk hunt draw, including instructions on how to register, readers may visit the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources web page.
