Etymology
[edit]From Middle High German Cölne, syncope of Cölene, from Old High German Colona, from Latin Colōnia (Agrippīna) (“Agrippine Colony”), short for Colōnia Claudia Āra Agrippīnēnsium, the official name of the original Roman settlement. A Middle High German byform was Cölen (with early apocope instead of syncope). To this form corresponds Dutch Keulen, while local Ripuarian Kölle can continue either variant. Doublet of Kolonie.
