Kyler Murray contract details: Massive extension keeps Cardinals QB in Arizona through 2028

Kyler Murray wears red, but there'll be a lot of green in his future.

After offseason contract drama, the 2019 No. 1 overall pick has agreed to a massive extension that will keep the passer in Arizona though the 2028 season, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero report.

The team made the deal official on Thursday:

In three seasons at the helm in Arizona, Murray has started 46 games and thrown 11,480 yards and 70 touchdowns to 34 interceptions in a loaded NFC West. The working relationship alongside head coach has proven fruitful: Arizona made the playoffs in 2021 and Murray has improved as a passer in each season.

The process to this point has been tumultuous. Murray seemingly expressed dissatisfaction with the organization by scrubbing his social media of any Cardinals references. The team hadn't made Murray an offer until April, when negotiations took another turn. 

Reports indicated that Murray wouldn't play on his current deal, leading to speculation that he might hold out. Well, a deal got done just in time, with NFL training camps set to kick off in the coming weeks.

Now, a new contract keeps him locked down in Arizona for another five years. Here's what to know about the deal:

Kyler Murray contract details

On July 21, 2022, Murray signed a five-year extension worth a total of $230.5 million, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. The deal contains $160 million in guarantees, including $104,300,000 at signing, and keeps the Cardinals passer locked in Arizona through 2028.

Murray is still playing on his rookie deal, will do so through the 2023 season, when he'll be playing on his fifth-year option. Here's how his contract breaks down figures per Spotrac and OverTheCap):

Murray's new extension kicks off in 2024 and runs for five seasons through 2028, meaning he'll be a free agent following the 2028 season.

Kyler Murray guaranteed money

Just under half of Murray's future contract is guaranteed: He'll be making $160 million in guarantees on his upcoming extension, in addition to the guaranteed money on his current deal.

Murray's fifth-year option is worth $29,703,000, and is fully guaranteed. That adds on to the fully-guaranteed, four-year rookie deal, which sat at $35,658,014.

So, in total, from rookie contract to extension, Murray is guaranteed $225,361,014 through the life of his contracts.
