Not long after this one time Buffalo Braves franchise opted to relocate to San Diego in 1978, team owners decided a name change was in order since Braves didn't very much reflect the Southern California identity. A name-the-team contest ensued with many more suitable options.  Out of all the submissions, the name Clippers was chosen which was a reference to San Diego being home to numerous large sailing ships in the 19th century that were at the time called 'clippers'. The team moved to Los Angeles in 1984 but retained the Clippers name.
