Q. How tall are the utility poles along Orange Olive Road? I’m trying to teach my kids about the Book of Esther, and I want to give them some comparison about how tall the gallows in the Bible book were.

– Mary Ann Mecke, Orange

A. Lady Orange couldn’t find an answer specifically for the poles along Orange Olive, but she was able to get a general range for the height of Southern California Edison utility poles.

Generally, poles are between 45 feet and 60 feet high, said Edison planner Jeff Cessna. Of that, about 6 feet to 8 feet are usually buried in the ground. How much is buried depends on how tall the poles are to start.

The height varies depending on the voltage they carry, Cessna said. Higher voltage equals higher poles and vice versa. It also depends on which utilities the poles are supporting.

“We make them as tall as needed to give us room and provide all the proper clearance,” he said.

Q. What happens to the coins that are thrown in the fountain in the plaza?

– Carolyn Kheel,

Los Angeles

A. Full disclosure: Mrs. Kheel is Lady Orange’s mom.

Mother Orange asked the question during a car-ride conversation about last week’s Lady Orange column, when someone asked if the fountain is ever cleaned.

Anyone who wants to guarantee the wish they make when they toss a coin into the fountain comes true might want to wish for park improvements.

That’s because that’s where the coins are going. All money tossed into the fountain is used toward maintaining Orange’s parks, said city spokesman Paul Sitkoff.
