If you want to do Lake Powell right, you should plan to camp out or rent a houseboat. There are lots of tiny islands in the lake where you can set up a tent and ponder the fact that the manmade lake was once a canyon, and your island was once a stone spire. If you do camp, make sure to anchor your tent really well; Big storms often appear out of nowhere. And bring lots of water and sunblock… there isn’t much shade on the lake.

One of the world's greatest places for houseboating!

Lake Powell is a reservoir on the Colorado River, straddling the border between Utah and Arizona, United States. Most of Lake Powell, along with Rainbow Bridge National Monument, is located in Utah. It is a major vacation spot that around two million people visit every year. It is the second largest man-made reservoir by maximum water capacity in the United States behind Lake Mead, storing 24,322,000 acre feet (3.0001×1010 m3) of water when full. However, due to high water withdrawals for human and agricultural consumption, and because of subsequent droughts in the area, Lake Mead has fallen below Lake Powell in size several times during the 21st century in terms of volume of water, depth and surface area. Lake Powell was created by the flooding of Glen Canyon by the Glen Canyon Dam, which also led to the creation of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, a popular summer destination. The reservoir is named for explorer John Wesley Powell, a one-armed American Civil War veteran who explored the river via three wooden boats in 1869. In 1972, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area was established. It is public land managed by the National Park Service, and available to the public for recreational purposes. It lies in parts of Garfield, Kane, and San Juan counties in southern Utah, and Coconino County in northern Arizona. The northern limits of the lake extend at least as far as the Hite Crossing Bridge. Lake Powell is a water storage facility for the Upper Basin states of the Colorado River Compact (Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico). The Compact specifies that the Upper Basin states are to provide a minimum annual flow of 7,500,000 acre feet to the Lower Basin states (Arizona, Nevada, and California).

One of our FAVORITE stops out of a 10,000 mile road trip. It is so beautiful! Planet of the Apes taped the opening scene here. There is soo much to do. The whole family can float the Colorado river down the Grand Canyon / rent a boat for the lake/ antelope canyons. This is an absolute must stop!!!

We camped on Lone Rock Beach and it was beautiful. On the one hand there were showers but it was sort of back country style so we had nothing to cook on. Great place to camp to go to antelope canyon and horseshoe bend.

One of the most beautiful and peaceful places on Earth... it is definitely worth the visit, especially for those busy-bodies looking to slow life down a bit and relax. You wont find a more calming location within 5000 miles...

We went to kill sometime before heading to horseshoe bend for the sunset! We did not know quite what we were getting ourselves into! The lake was very beautiful and warm! The public access site was very clean and we enjoyed a few hours there. Pack a cooler and enjoy your day on the beach (:
