Lamar was married to Khloe for just two years when the tragedy struck. In July 2011, he was involved in a car accident: Lamar’s driver struck a teenager riding a motorcycle, and the 15-year-old died. Though Lamar wasn’t driving the SUV, the incident apparently broke him, as Us Weekly magazine reports. “He’s said he never fully recovered from that and has been living with the sadness ever since,” a friend of Lamar’s tells the magazine.

That fatal car crash completely shattered Lamar’s spirit. “Things kept getting worse and worse, and he was numbing the pain with whatever he could find,” the friend adds. His substance abuse led to a DUI bust in 2013, and Khloe filed for divorce in Dec. of that year.

Now, Lamar’s troubles have culminated in the ultimate crisis: he was found unconscious in a Nevada brothel on Oct. 13 after days of reportedly partying. He was brought back from the brink of death after intense medical care, but it will still be a long time before he is able to leave the hospital. “Every day he is getting a bit better, but he is continuing to have extensive tests on his cognitive and motor functions, so no one can make a definitive diagnosis yet,” a source told E! Online. “He is more coherent day by day.” Lamar’s recovery will be slow, but hopefully steady.
