You couldn’t get a more Yorkshire production than Last Tango in Halifax, about the late-blooming relationship between Alan (Derek Jacobi) and Celia (Anne Reid), both widowers who rekindle a teenage romance in their 70s. The award-winning series was written and produced by Sally Wainwright, the darling of Yorkshire TV, who grew up nearby in Huddersfield. Last Tango in Halifax is loosely based on her own mother’s experience of finding an old flame on Friends Reunited in her 70s.

Spanning several years and five series (so far), Last Tango in Halifax is set in the Calder Valley and filmed widely across Calderdale including Halifax town centre, Sowerby Bridge, Ripponden and Elland. Other filming locations include Bridlington, Ilkley, Batley, the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds and Broughton Hall in Skipton.

Last Tango In Halifax had been historically based over the Pennines in Manchester, with visits to Yorkshire for certain key locations. For series 5 we decided to move the whole production across and base it out of Leeds. Some of the characters had moved house and we exploited the scenery of the Ripponden Valley along with Ilkley, Halifax and Bridlington on the East Yorkshire Coast. I firmly believe Yorkshire offers a rich and varied landscape, from spectacular Pennine hills, former industrial towns like Halifax and the wide expanse of the Wolds in East Yorkshire. Even the M62 snaking through the Pennines lent itself to some stunning drone shots. We also crewed locally as much as we could and tapped in to the wealth of talent based in the area, including using local facilities for camera and lighting.
