What Is Last Week Tonight With John Oliver About?

Former Daily Show host and correspondent John Oliver brings his persona to this weekly news satire program.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (often abridged as Last Week Tonight) is an American late-night talk and news satire television program hosted by comedian John Oliver. The half-hour-long show premiered in April 2014 on HBO. Last Week Tonight shares some similarities with Comedy Central’s The Daily Show (where Oliver was previously featured as a correspondent and fill-in host), as it takes a satirical look at news, politics and current events, but on a weekly basis.

Oliver has stated that he has “full creative freedom, including free rein to criticize corporations”. His initial contract with HBO was for two years with an option for extension. In September 2017, HBO announced that the show had been renewed for three additional seasons of 30 episodes each, keeping the show on the air through 2020. The show’s seventh season, the last season promised by the 2017 renewal announcement, premiered on February 16, 2020.

The Emmy-winning series will return for its eighth season Sunday, February 14 at 11:00-11:30 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and HBO Max. Watch the trailer below.

    My husband and I are ardent fans of John Oliver’s show and we watch it religiously. It’s honest with a mix of his great humor and sarcasm. We are looking forward to another season with John on Sunday nights.
