Laying sod directly on river sand?

the person putting in my yard wants to lay sod directly on river sand. does that work? it seems to me a layer of mulch or top soil would be preferable.

I laid GN bermuda sod directly on beach (ocean) sand with no problem. Roots just extended down from the sod into the sand. Keep in mind, the roots seek moisture and nutrients, sand is as good a medium as any to hold these. Sand drains more quickly than many soils would, but bermuda does not like standing water anyhow so this is often a good argument for a sand base.

I agree with Buck. Sand is a great growing medium. If there is any negatives they are in the management needed to maintain the turf. Fertilizer apps should be frequent and lighter. This is because the nutrients leach out before the turf can use it. Water should be applied as usual-deep and infrequent-to promote deeper roots. Check soil moisture in the rootzone prior to irrgation. Check and adjust the pH of your soil prior to sodding. Keep up with your nutrients and your turf should thrive.

I would not recommend adding a topsoil layer. This will cause layering and could be a maintenance nightmare. If desired you could till in organic matter such as compost or manure. But be warned: Roots will stay in that layer so if you are going to do it: DO IT DEEP!
