Lee Cheong-san is a supporting character in the webtoon All of Us Are Dead and one of the main protagonists (alongside Nam On-jo) in its Netflix series. He is a student of Hyosan High School and Nam On-jo's childhood friend whom he is secretly in love with. During the epidemic in high school, he somehow becomes the leader of the group of teenagers and tries as best he can to protect them and survive.

He is portrayed by Yoon Chan-young and by Harrison Xu in the English version.

History[]

In the first episode, Cheong-san complains about his mother using his name for the restaurant when she invites him and his friends over for a new dish. In high school, the epidemic spreads rapidly and the students are attacked in the cafeteria. Along with On-jo, Cheong-san manages to escape and takes refuge in a classroom with other fellow survivors. Cheong-san says what's happening is like the Train to Busan movie but the others don't believe him. After losing I-sak to an infected teacher, Cheong-san decides they should all go to the media room which is a few floors down. Once there, Cheong-san's best friend Gyeong-su is deliberately infected by Na-yeon and turns into a zombie. Cheong-san manages to kick him out the window, whistling to get his attention and mourns his friend's death. After learning that Na-yeon is the one responsible, he decides with the others to exile her from the group although the teacher follows her to save her.

Along with Su-hyeok, Cheong-san goes upstairs in search of a phone but finds himself separated from him. On his way to the school principal's office, he comes across Gwi-nam, a bully who was tying up the principal. So Cheong-san starts filming the delinquent killing the principal before fighting Cheong-san to get the phone back and delete the recording of the murder. However Cheong-san flees and Gwi-nam chases him to the library. The two then fight and Cheong-san gouges out Gwi-nam's eye before knocking him down onto the zombies who devour him. Still alone, Cheong-san hears a call from his friends who inform him that they are coming to get him. After doing so, Cheong-san notices Nam-ra is bitten and wants to kill her but Su-hyeok holds him back saying that she is not a zombie. To pass the time, each teenager films themselves with a camera and delivers a message to their respective parents.

Then they decide to go up to the roof but the door is blocked on the other side by Kim Cheol-soo. They then have to fight the zombies and Gwi-nam who turns out to be immune to the virus. After successfully climbing to the roof, the group write a giant SOS message and build a fire for the night. They are once again confronted by Gwi-nam who goes after Cheong-san and demands his eye. Thanks to Nam-ra's superhuman strength, Gwi-nam is thrown over the roof of the high school. Right after they discuss and understand that Gwi-nam is immune to the virus. Later, they are rescued by the military who have come to get scientist Byeong-chan's computer. However, they leave without them when the commander declares that the entire population is infected to avoid an unexpected transformation at the camp. This abandonment enrages Cheong-san who screams and smashes everything he finds on the roof, in despair.

When the rain falls, the teens notice that it weakens the zombies and decide to descend from the roof where they encounter another group of survivors. They manage to create a barricade and escape into the forest with the help of Nam So-ju, On-jo's father. They go to the construction site and climb on a scaffolding.

As they learn that the army is going to bomb the school, Gwi-nam remonstrates and attacks Cheong-san whom he bites on the arm. Understanding his fate, Cheong-san kisses and says goodbye to On-jo before entering the building and luring all the zombies to him to allow the others to escape downstairs to safety. Upon reaching the very top, Gwi-nam confronts Cheong-san one last time, successfully gouging his eye in revenge before the two fall into a hole as the blast from the bombardment hits them. As they fall, Cheong-san grabs Gwi-nam from behind and pulls him down the shaft (it’s ambiguous as to if he was saving Gwi-nam or using him as a human shield). From then on, Cheong-san is presumed dead but he is not seen burning as he falls down the shaft (unlike Gwi-nam) and neither his nor Gwi-nam’s bodies appear anywhere when On-jo and his friends return to the scene moments later.

Four months later, Nam-ra meets with his friends again mentions there being other kids like her. This indicates Cheong-san and Gwi-nam are both still alive.

Skills and abilities:

Parkour Skills: Throughout the series, Lee has demonstrated extremely high level parkour skills, with this ability he easily manages to escape from the zombies, climbing over every obstacle in the zombie-infected school.

Peak Human Strength: He is an athletically strong teenager, as shown to be strong enough to grapple with zombies, knocking them down by punching them or using blunt objects and pushing them, with a punch he was able to knock Su-hyeok off and briefly struggle with him, however, his punches are not fully capable of hurting Gwi-nam (a half-zombie boy with advanced strength) but he is able to slightly push him with his punches.

Exceptional Durability: Lee is quite resilient, being quite capable of withstanding super-strong blows from Gwi-Nam and enduring the latter gouging out his eye.

Exceptional Speed and Agility: Lee is incredibly agile and fast throughout the series, enough to escape zombies on numerous occasions.

Combat Ability: While he is not an exceptional fighter like Su-hyeok, he has shown some combat ability, using blunt objects to defend himself from zombies with ease, he was able to hold his own in a fight against Gwi-Nam (when he was human), on one occasion, along with Su-hyeok, both were able to knock down several zombies during the rooftop stairs, against Gwi-Nam (half zombie) he has many difficulties due to the latter's advanced strength but is still very capable of standing firm until his inevitable defeat.

Intelligence: Despite not being a genius, he proved to be intelligent, coming up with a plan to escape from the room they were trapped in by using an emergency hose to get down to the third floor and to gain knowledge of sign language.

Trivia[]

• After his fight and the bombing of the high school, Cheong-san is presumed dead, moreover he was bitten he would turn into a zombie but many fans assume that he is still alive or even a "half-bie", since there is plenty of evidence that points to him still being alive. The director himself mentioned that he had ideas for “all of the characters, including Cheong-san” to appear in season 2 and he has plans for how bring Cheong-san back. After revealing that his character's fate was undecided but her personally hopes he lives, Chan-young was one of the four actors to remote season 2 of the show, essentially confirming Cheong’s survival.
• In the original webtoon, Cheong-san is just a supporting character and his fate is also more unambiguous, with him disappearing and not been seen again, but it is implied that he died and turned into a zombie.
