Lia Catherine Thomas is a University of Pennsylvania student and an American swimmer.

Thomas’ athletic successes as a trans woman became a focus of media debate in 2021 and 2022, with Athletics Illustrated dubbing her “America’s most controversial athlete” and CNN dubbing her “the face of the debate on transgender women in sports.”

Thomas has an older brother and grew up in Austin, Texas.

Thomas started swimming at the age of five.

Thomas won the women’s 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:33.24 in March 2022, becoming the first openly transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division I national title in any sport. Olympic silver medallist Emma Weyant finished second, 1.75 seconds behind Thomas.

Outside the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, where Thomas swam, about 50 protesters and counter-protesters gathered.

Some in the audience held banners that read “Save Women’s Sports.”
