Life Cycle | Pronghorn Antelopes

A pronghorn’s life span, on average, is about 9-12 years, give or take. A baby pronghorn is called a fawn, and they are usually born in May or June. Usually, fawns are born as twins, not singular. When they are born, the mother leaves her fawn laying in the taller grass for around 3 days, so it isn’t visible, while she looks for food. Newborns are odourless, so predators would not be able to seek them out. About a week after being born, the fawn joins the heard, and after about 3 weeks of being alive, they are able to begin grazing. Once a fawn joins a heard, they start to pick up on behaviours of adult pronghorns, and they start to participate regular in everyday life. Although, when it comes time to spring/summer, the heard of pronghorns usually separates from the males, into groups of around 12, but the fawns always stay will their mother. Once the bucks (males) reach the age of 3, they begin to mate. In the summer, they gather in a harem, which is a group of does, and they mate with one of the does. They then have their fawn in May/June, and the cycle starts all over again. The fawns are left in the grass for about three days, and so on. That is the life cycle of a pronghorn antelope.
